Mastering the Learning Curve for Robotic-Assisted Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Amalia Jonsson et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the short-term and long-term outcomes of robotic-assisted CABG and estimated the threshold for achieving mastery. The results showed that robotic-assisted CABG can be performed safely with excellent results, even during a surgeon's early experience. However, achieving mastery in this technique requires a longer learning curve, approximately 250 to 500 cases, compared to achieving competency.

A conservative screening algorithm to determine candidacy for robotic mitral valve surgery

Raphaelle A. Chemtob et al.

Summary: This study assessed the outcomes of a conservative screening algorithm for selecting patients with degenerative mitral valve disease for robotically assisted mitral valve repair. The algorithm successfully qualified 60% of patients for robotic surgery and demonstrated comparable outcomes to sternotomy in terms of atrial fibrillation, blood transfusions, and hospital stay.

Super Fellowships Among Cardiothoracic Trainees: Prevalence and Motivations

Curtis S. Bergquist et al.

Summary: The study surveyed cardiothoracic surgery graduates and found that pursuing super fellowships is common, with most traditional graduates opting for a 2-year program. Reasons for pursuing super fellowships varied, including congenital specialties, feeling inadequate training, and job requirements.

Impact of advanced clinical fellowship training on future research productivity and career advancement in adult cardiac surgery

Hanjay Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that academic adult cardiac surgeons who pursued advanced clinical fellowships exhibited similar research productivity and career advancement as those who did not pursue additional clinical training. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of total publications, H-index, frequency of NIH grant funding, and time to achieve full professor rank.

The learning curve of robotic coronary arterial bypass surgery: A report from the STS database

William L. Patrick et al.

Summary: This study found that surgeons achieve stable clinical outcomes in robotically assisted coronary artery bypass grafting (RA-CABG) after performing their 10th procedure. As experience increases, the rate of approach conversion and reoperation decreases, while procedural success rate increases.
