Review of latest advances on dark matter from the viewpoint of the Occam razor principle

Eugene Oks

Summary: The majority of theories on dark matter either propose exotic subatomic particles that have never been experimentally discovered or suggest altering the laws of physics. In this article, I explore three theories that do not resort to these approaches, making them preferable according to the Occam's razor principle.

Measurement of the 2S1/2-8D5/2 Transition in Hydrogen

A. D. Brandt et al.

Summary: In this study, we measured the hydrogen 2S(1/2) - 8D(5/2) transition using a cryogenic atomic beam. The resonance frequency and the derived proton radius and Rydberg constant showed significant disagreement with the CODATA recommended value.

Differential cross section predictions for PRad-II from dispersion theory

Yong-Hui Lin et al.

Summary: We predict the differential cross sections for e(-)p and e(+)p elastic scattering in the PRad-II energy region. The sensitivity of the cross sections to two-photon exchange effects is investigated, and it is found that the differences between model calculations and phenomenological extractions of two-photon corrections cannot be resolved if the uncertainty in the form factors is taken into account.

The proton charge radius

H. Gao et al.

Summary: This review examines the latest situation concerning the proton charge radius, with particular focus on electron-scattering measurements. The importance of accurate knowledge about the proton charge radius for understanding quantum chromodynamics and bound state quantum electrodynamics calculations is discussed, along with the theoretical backgrounds and recent developments in determining the proton charge radius using different experimental techniques. Upcoming experiments and the puzzle of the deuteron charge radius are also mentioned.

The origin of the proton radius puzzle

Simone Pacetti et al.

Summary: The size of the proton, as the basic building block of matter, is still controversial. Recent experiments show a smaller radius value compared to previous ones, leading to the re-analysis of data and evaluation of uncertainties as key aspects in resolving the controversy.

DES map shows a smoother distribution of matter than expected: a possible explanation

Eugene Oks

Summary: The Dark Energy Survey team has recently created the largest and most detailed map of dark matter distribution in the Universe. The distribution was found to be slightly smoother and less clumpy than predicted by general relativity. The team's study suggests a hint of new physical laws, but the model presented in the paper offers a simpler explanation without relying on any new laws.

The proton charge radius extracted from the initial-state radiation experiment at MAMI

M. Mihovilovic et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive reinterpretation of existing cross-section data for elastic electron-proton scattering was conducted, resulting in a significantly improved accuracy of the extracted proton charge radius. Refining external energy corrections allowed for an outstanding description of the radiative tail, leading to a new value for the charge radius based on a novel framework and polynomial model analysis of cross sections.

Dark Energy Survey Year 3 results: Curved-sky weak lensing mass map reconstruction

N. Jeffrey et al.

Summary: Reconstructed mass maps from DES Y3 weak gravitational lensing data were presented, using four different methods implemented on the celestial sphere. The performance of the methods was quantified using simulations closely matched to the DES Y3 data, and systematic error tests were conducted. The recovered dark matter map showed the largest sky coverage of any galaxy weak lensing map to date, and was used for evaluating cosmic-void profiles.
