Design and evaluation of non-conventional extraction for bioactive compounds recovery from spent coffee (Coffee arabica L.) grounds

Milena Fernandes da Silva et al.

Summary: Spent coffee grounds are a valuable waste product in the coffee industry, containing antioxidants that can be extracted using high pressure and temperature techniques. The optimal extraction conditions were found to be ethanol concentration of 50% (v/v) and temperature of 150 degrees C, resulting in high yields of bioactive compounds. Peleg's model showed that 60 minutes of extraction time is sufficient to produce extracts with high extraction yields and significant antiradical properties.

Pretreatment processes assisted subcritical water hydrolysis for valorisation of spent coffee grounds

Jin-Seok Park et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of sequential extraction techniques and pretreatment methods in enhancing the recovery of high-value products from spent coffee ground. The results showed that supercritical carbon dioxide deoiling and subcritical water hydrolysis can improve the recovery of reducing sugars, total phenolic content, and total flavonoid content, as well as enhance antioxidant activities. Increased temperature promotes hydrolysis efficiency but also leads to the conversion of reducing sugars into 5-HMF and furfural. Particle size reduction can increase the recovery of chlorogenic acid.
