Determining urban-rural coordinated development in major grain-producing areas based on urbanization and cultivated land use efficiency coordination level: A case study in Hunan Province, China

Xue Wei et al.

Summary: Urbanization and cultivated land use coordination is crucial for urban-rural coordinated development in major grain-producing areas in China, but has been rarely studied. This study examined the spatiotemporal evolution of the level of coordination between urbanization and cultivated land use in Hunan Province from 2000 to 2018 at the county level, identified different types of coordination, and discussed key optimization measures for each type. The results showed that urban-rural coordinated development depends on the intensity of interactions and integration between urbanization and cultivated land use systems. The study provides valuable insights for implementing regional coordinated development strategies in major food-producing regions.

Spatiotemporal Evolution Trends of Urban Total Factor Carbon Efficiency under the Dual-Carbon Background

Haiyan Luo et al.

Summary: To understand the development laws of carbon efficiency and achieve the dual-carbon goal, the total factor carbon efficiency of 283 cities in China from 2004 to 2019 was calculated using the super-efficiency EBM model. The spatial-temporal variations in carbon efficiency were analyzed, and the dynamic evolution trends were examined. The results showed decreasing overall differences in carbon efficiency among cities, with greater differences within regions than between regions. There was a significant spatial correlation in carbon efficiency, with a centripetal aggregation pattern from northeast to southwest. The dynamic evolution of carbon emission intensity varied across regions, and there was a path dependence effect on the transition probability of carbon efficiency between cities.

Bottled water quality ranking via the multiple-criteria decision-making process: a case study of two-stage fuzzy AHP and TOPSIS

Ramin Nabizadeh et al.

Summary: Access to healthy drinking water is crucial, and the rise in bottled water consumption has led to difficulties in choosing the highest-quality brands. Multiple-criteria decision-making methods, such as FAHP and TOPSIS, were used to rank different brands of bottled water based on various chemical and bacteriological parameters. Carcinogenic chemical compounds were found to be the most important in ranking bottled water brands, followed by bacteriological factors, pathogenic chemical compounds, and other chemical compounds with varying levels of toxicity.

Industrial restructuring, energy consumption and economic growth: Evidence from China

Xin-gang Zhao et al.

Summary: This paper explores the equilibrium relationship and Granger causality among industrial restructuring, energy consumption, and economic growth at aggregated and disaggregated levels. The findings demonstrate that industrial structure rationalization has a higher impact on economic growth compared to industrial structure upgrading, while natural gas and renewable energy consumption have a smaller effect on economic growth. Therefore, it is important to focus on industrial structure rationalization and develop policies that encourage clean energy development.

Investigation of the Effects of Climate Variability, Anthropogenic Activities, and Climate Change on Streamflow Using Multi-Model Ensembles

Sabab Ali Shah et al.

Summary: In this study, the factors influencing streamflow were evaluated in three large rivers. The results revealed that climate variability was the leading cause of alteration in the streamflow in two rivers, while anthropogenic activity had a greater influence on the third river. Future climate change is also expected to impact streamflow, emphasizing the importance of considering these factors in future planning for large river basins.

Exploring renewable energy, financial development, environmental quality, and economic growth nexus: new evidence from composite indices for environmental quality and financial development

Hossein Ali Fakher et al.

Summary: This research examines the association between trade, financial development, consumption of renewable energy, environmental quality, foreign direct investment, and economic growth in both low- and high-income countries. The findings show that renewable energy consumption and environmental quality contribute to economic growth in high-income nations but not in low-income countries. Financial development plays a crucial role in boosting economic growth in both high- and low-income countries. Trade openness stimulates economic growth in high-income countries but hinders it in low-income countries. Causality analysis reveals different hypotheses, such as the conservation hypothesis and feedback hypothesis, in explaining the relationship between renewable energy consumption and economic growth in low- and high-income countries. One-way causality from growth to environmental quality and bidirectional causality between environmental quality and economic growth are established. Comprehensive environmental and economic policies are recommended.

Research on the Spatial-Temporal Differentiation and Path Analysis of China's Provincial Regions' High-Quality Economic Development

Boyang Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper constructs an evaluation system for the index of high-quality economic development based on five key points and uses various methods to measure the level of high-quality economic development in 30 regions in China. The study finds that there is spatial clustering of high-quality economic development in China, with the eastern region being better developed. The polarization among regions has been alleviated over time but challenges still remain. The factors influencing high-quality economic development can be classified into different types, and the distribution characteristics of contributing factors vary among regions. These findings provide reference and scientific basis for government policies and solutions to the challenges of coordinated sustainable development.
