A Robust Optimization Model for Multi-Period Railway Network Design Problem Considering Economic Aspects and Environmental Impact

Morteza Noruzi et al.

Summary: The railway network design problem is a critical issue in transportation due to its significance and variety of applications. This research proposes a novel robust bi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to minimize cost and environmental impact under uncertainty. The proposed model addresses strategic and operational decisions through railway project selection and product flow determination. A nondominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) is employed to handle the complexity of the problem and find near-optimal solutions in a reasonable time.

Application of AHP method for project selection in the context of sustainable development

Lukas Jurik et al.

Summary: Any activity of an industrial enterprise will have impacts on the economy, society, and environment. The focus of the current business goal is to generate and maximize profits. However, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development emphasizes the need to consider how profits are generated and their impact on society and the environment. Decision-making in industrial enterprises is a multi-criteria process, and exact methods, such as the Analytical Hierarchical Process, can be applied to support sustainable decision-making. Studies have shown that managers often rely on subjective reasoning or intuition when making complex decisions. This article presents the application of the Analytical Hierarchical Process in the decision-making process for selecting production projects based on sustainable development criteria.

Designing a sustainable closed-loop supply chain network of face masks during the COVID-19 pandemic: Pareto-based algorithms

Erfan Babaee Tirkolaee et al.

Summary: This study develops a mathematical model to design a sustainable mask Closed-Loop Supply Chain Network (CLSCN) during the COVID-19 outbreak. A multi-objective Mixed-Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed to address various decisions within a multi-period multi-echelon multi-product supply chain. Sustainable development is considered by minimizing the total cost, total pollution, and total human risk. Two algorithms, MOGWO and NSGA-II, are used to solve the model and find Pareto optimal solutions. The results show that MOGWO performs better in terms of dispersion and solution quality. A real case study and sensitivity analyses are conducted to validate the model. Practical implications and managerial insights are discussed.
