Summary: Habitat quality is an important indicator for biodiversity, and assessing its dynamic changes induced by land-use and land-cover changes provides insights for sustainable development in ecologically vulnerable areas. This study examined the land-use dynamics in the Wuling Mountains in China and evaluated habitat quality using the InVEST model. The results showed that land transformation improved landscape heterogeneity but led to a decline in habitat quality, and the topographic gradient significantly influenced the spatial patterns of habitat quality.

Summary: The study used the InVEST model, topographic distribution index, and Mann-Kendall test to investigate the distribution, changing trends, and effects of topographic gradient on habitat quality. The results showed that habitat quality exhibited three types of trends (significant decline, non-significant change, and significant increase) during 2000-2020. High-elevation areas experienced a significant decline due to the livelihood structure of local residents and geological disasters, while low-lying areas showed a significant increase in habitat quality due to forest conservation projects. Middle topographic position showed no significant changes. Suggestions for ecological management and protection measures were provided for different elevation areas.

The saponin content in highly suitable habitats was relatively low, with temperature and precipitation playing key roles in the distribution of P. notoginseng.

Summary: Urbanization has led to urban ecosystem dysfunction, habitat fragmentation, and biodiversity loss, posing threats to sustainable urban development. Understanding the driving mechanisms of urban habitat quality is crucial for assessing urban ecological environments. By analyzing the case of Zhengzhou, China, this study found that land use/cover change, topographic features, population, and vegetation index significantly influence the spatial distribution of urban habitat quality. Based on the results, directions for habitat protection were proposed, including adjusting urban land use structure, applying nature-based solutions, and establishing a systematic thinking model for multi-level urban habitat sustainability.

Summary: Constructing ecological security patterns (ESPs) is crucial for regional sustainability, and this study improves the current methodological framework by integrating ecosystem service trade-offs, typical characteristics of karst areas, and circuit theory in the Daning river basin. The results show significant variations in the spatial patterns of six ecosystem services. The proposed method demonstrates flexibility and feasibility and enhances the robustness and sustainability of ESPs in karst areas.

Summary: Habitat quality is important for biodiversity assessment and ecosystem processes, but it is influenced by urban development and construction. This study analyzed the spatial and temporal variations of habitat quality in the Three Gorges Reservoir area and demonstrated its response to landscape dynamics. The results showed significant differences in habitat quality across regions and altitude-slope zones. Habitat quality was also affected by vegetation recovery and urban expansion. Therefore, a change in vegetation recovery model is recommended for improving habitat quality.

Summary: Urban sprawl and territory fragmentation are factors that contribute to the degradation of peri-urban areas in European cities. This research investigates the role of Green Infrastructure (GI) and Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in redefining these areas and connecting urban and rural landscapes. The case study focuses on the rural-urban transition fringe in the Southern Milan periphery and examines transformation pressures, tendencies, and local activities. The study highlights the potential of refurbishing and interconnecting disused open spaces and buildings to create a network of GI and NBS, enhancing ecosystem services and considering cultural heritage and multicultural aspects.

Summary: This study used the ArcGIS platform and the InVEST model to investigate the spatial pattern and evolution characteristics of habitat quality in Yanshan County from 2000 to 2018. The results showed significant changes in farmland and construction land, with expansions in areas of low, relatively low, and high habitat quality and contractions in areas of medium and relatively high quality. These changes were closely related to the distribution of land use.

Summary: Coastal wetland degradation and fragmentation contribute to habitat and biodiversity loss. We assessed the risk to 35 coastal wetland national nature reserves (NNRs) in China using a wetland ecological risk assessment framework. Most of the NNRs had low risk levels in both 2000 and 2020, but some showed an increasing risk over time. The expansion of built-up land, cropland occupation, road disturbance, and water quality were found to be significantly associated with the increase in risk.

Summary: Effective planning for species conservation often requires understanding habitat use. This study developed behavior-specific spatial habitat-use models using GPS telemetry data, providing valuable information for the management of threatened species. The study found that recently fledged Tasmanian wedge-tailed eagles selected different areas for perching, short-distance flight, and long-distance flight, with preferences for forest edges, steep topography, and areas further from forest edges, respectively.

By studying the situation in Wenzhou City, it is found that the interactions between land use change and annual precipitation change, as well as those between land use change and population density change, have the most significant impact on habitat quality. The conversion of forest land to cultivated land, conversion of water area to cultivated land, and conversion of forest land to building land have the greatest impact on habitat quality.

Summary: Anthropogenic pressures have caused spatial and temporal patterns of Land-Use Land Cover (LULC) change, which significantly influence the quality of natural habitat and ecosystem functions. The study assessed the habitat quality of the Kaffa biosphere reserve using the InVEST model, revealing lower habitat quality in settlement and agricultural areas. Spatial metrics showed forest fragmentation and the expansion of settlement areas was identified as a significant factor influencing habitat quality. Overall, evaluating and predicting the spatiotemporal status of habitat quality under the influence of LULC change is crucial for biodiversity conservation and landscape planning strategies.
