Effects of intergroup contact on explicit and implicit outgroup attitudes: A longitudinal field study with majority and minority group members

Summary: The quantity of intergroup contact is associated with outgroup attitudes, while the quality is not. Reduced intergroup anxiety serves as a mediator between quantity contact and improved explicit attitudes. The product of quantity and quality of contact is longitudinally related to more positive implicit outgroup attitudes.

Meeting in school: Cultural diversity approaches of teachers and intergroup contact among ethnic minority and majority adolescents

Summary: This study found that teachers' perceived equal treatment was associated with positive intergroup contact and reduced negative intergroup contact among adolescents. However, teachers' perceived support for contact and cooperation and interest in children's cultural background were not related to either positive or negative intergroup contact. Importantly, these findings were consistent for both ethnic minority and majority adolescents. This study provides valuable insights into the crucial role that teachers can play in promoting cultural diversity approaches for harmonious intergroup interactions in schools.

The moderating role of socioeconomic status on the relationship between teacher social support and sense of belonging to school

Summary: This study fills the gap in the literature regarding the impact of students' socioeconomic status on their perceptions of teacher social support and the strength of the relationship between teacher social support and students' sense of belonging to school. The findings demonstrate that the link between teacher social support and students' sense of belonging to school is stronger for high-SES students, and there is a negative association between teacher support and SES. These results highlight the importance of socioeconomic status in students' perceptions of their interactions with teachers and their sense of school belonging.

The practice of phenomenology in educational research

Summary: In recent years, phenomenology has become an increasingly popular research method in educational research. However, there is confusion regarding the definition of phenomenology and how to apply it in non-philosophical contexts. This article provides an overview of three influential approaches to phenomenology as a research method, argues that these approaches tend to limit phenomenology to either descriptive or interpretative focus, and suggests the need to explore successful applications of phenomenology in non-philosophical fields for further theoretical and methodological support.

Enhancing or reducing interethnic hierarchies? Teacher diversity approaches and ethnic majority and minority students' ethnic attitudes and discrimination experiences

Summary: Diversity approaches in school have an impact on students' interethnic relations, as perceived by both teachers and students. Specifically, multiculturalism and anti-discrimination approaches by teachers reduce interethnic bias and raise awareness of discrimination among ethnic majority students. However, there is a need for better communication between teachers and students regarding inclusive diversity approaches.
