Simplified models for uncertainty quantification of extreme events using Monte Carlo technique

Xiaonong Hu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an algorithm using Monte Carlo technique for uncertainty quantification analysis of extreme value statistics. By developing simplified models that eliminate the constraints resulting from the assumption of normality, it provides more accurate expressions that are convenient for engineering applications.

Sheltering effect of punched steel plate sand fences for controlling blown sand hazards along the Golmud-Korla Railway: Field observation and numerical simulation studies

Kai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the effects of double-row PSP sand fences on wind and sand resistance through field observations and numerical simulations, and finds that the protection efficiency of the double-row PSP sand fences is sufficient for effective control of sand hazards associated with extremely strong wind in the Gobi areas.

Theoretical and experimental analysis of applicability of sill with different widths on the gate discharge coefficients

Rasoul Daneshfaraz et al.

Summary: The effects of gate opening, sill placement with different widths, and the position of the sill from under the gate on the discharge coefficient were investigated in this study. The results showed that increasing the sill width and decreasing the total flow area through the gate led to an increase in the discharge coefficient. Installing the sill at certain intervals at increasing distances from the upstream of the gate also increased the discharge coefficient. The discharge coefficient was highest for a tangential sill.

Influence of Sill on the Hydraulic Regime in Sluice Gates: An Experimental and Numerical Analysis

Rasoul Daneshfaraz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of sills with different geometric specifications at various positions on the hydraulic characteristics of flow through sluice gates experimentally and numerically. The simulation results showed that the RNG turbulence model is more accurate compared to other turbulence models. The discharge coefficient is influenced by factors such as gate opening, sill state, and sill thickness.

Theoretical and experimental analysis of applicability of sill with different widths on the gate discharge coefficients

Rasoul Daneshfaraz et al.

Summary: The experimental study investigated the effects of gate opening, different widths of sills under the gate, and sill positions on the discharge coefficient. The results showed that the discharge coefficient increases with increasing sill width and decreasing total area of flow passing through the gate. Sluice gates with sills have higher discharge coefficients compared to gates without sills.

Investigations into the design of sand control fence for Gobi buildings

Guowei Xin et al.

Summary: Wind-blown sand disasters have a significant impact on human activities, and sand fences are recognized as an efficient technology to protect against desertification. However, there is limited research on the protection of Gobi buildings from sand disasters. Through Computational Fluid Dynamic simulations and wind-tunnel experiments, the optimal height, porosity, and inclined slat angle of sand fences for Gobi buildings are proposed to maximize sand prevention efficiency while considering construction cost.
