Sustainable land management for addressing soil conservation under climate change in Mediterranean landscapes: perspectives from the Mijares watershed

Joao Pompeu et al.

Summary: Land degradation due to water erosion is a significant issue in the Mediterranean basin and will worsen with climate change. However, adopting sustainable land management (SLM) practices can help mitigate soil ecosystem service loss. Our study focused on assessing the adoption of SLM practices for soil conservation in the Mijares river watershed on the Eastern Spanish coast, modeling soil loss under baseline and future climate change scenarios. We found that SLM practices can potentially reduce soil loss in specific areas of the watershed by up to 4% compared to a scenario without SLM implementation.

Soil erosion and sediment transport under climate change for Mera River, in Italian Alps of Valchiavenna

L. Maruffi et al.

Summary: The study estimated distributed soil erosion in Valchiavenna valley in the Rhaetian Alps, using the Dynamic-RUSLE model. Results showed potential increase in soil erosion, particularly in winter, and decrease in summer. Soil erosion studies help predict the impacts of future climate change on land.

Multi-Decadal Assessment of Soil Loss in a Mediterranean Region Characterized by Contrasting Local Climates

Caterina Samela et al.

Summary: Soil erosion is a widespread soil degradation phenomenon, particularly in Mediterranean landscapes. This study uses a diachronic approach to analyze soil loss, taking into account climate variability and land cover dynamics using remote sensing data. The findings show a slight reduction in soil loss in the study area, but severe erosion is still a major issue.

Projections of soil loss by water erosion in Europe by 2050

Panos Panagos et al.

Summary: Future soil erosion rates are projected to increase in the agricultural areas of the EU and UK due to expected changes in climatic conditions and land use patterns. While land use change may lead to a decrease in soil erosion rates, the projected increase in future rainfall erosivity will require targeted intervention measures to address soil erosion effectively. Agro-environmental policies, specifically those outlined in the EU Common Agricultural Policy, are proposed as the most effective mechanisms to mitigate the impact of climate change on soil losses.

Mediterranean Olive Orchards under Climate Change: A Review of Future Impacts and Adaptation Strategies

Helder Fraga et al.

Summary: The olive tree is a traditional crop in the Mediterranean Basin, well-adapted to the Mediterranean climate. However, climate change poses new challenges with warming and drying trends threatening olive cultivation. Effective adaptation strategies must be planned to cope with the projected changes.

Summary: Soil quality is crucial for ecosystem functionality, especially in Mediterranean regions facing the risk of desertification. This study highlights the importance of soil organic carbon (SOC) in maintaining key soil functions and ecosystem services, stressing the need for immediate management plans to prevent complete land degradation.

Simulating Future Groundwater Recharge in Coastal and Inland Catchments

Gianluigi Busico et al.

Summary: Groundwater recharge was quantified using SWAT in coastal and inland hydrological basins in Greece, with accurate calibration and simulation results obtained for the Mouriki and Anthemountas basins. Significant variations in groundwater recharge are predicted in the coastal zone, while variations in the inland catchment of Mouriki are insignificant. Groundwater management strategies, including detailed monitoring and seasonal recharge adjustments, should be implemented in coastal aquifers.
