Torrefaction: Process Review

Milica Preradovic et al.

Summary: There is an urgent need to replace fossil fuels globally. Torrefaction, a thermal technology, can overcome the deficiencies of raw biomass such as low energy density, high moisture content, rotting, and hygroscopicity. It converts lignocellulosic materials into 'fuels' for power plants, combustion units, or gasifiers.

Study of Mass Loss and Elemental Analysis of Pine Wood Pellets in a Small-Scale Reactor

Lelis Gonzaga Fraga et al.

Summary: Studying the thermal decomposition of wood pellets is crucial for understanding their behavior during combustion. The experiment showed that the reaction rate increases with temperature, leading to higher mass loss. The remaining mass consists primarily of fixed carbon and ash, comprising about 3% of the total mass. The concentration of species in wood pellets is influenced by residence time and temperature.

Determining co-combustion characteristics, kinetics and synergy behaviors of raw and torrefied forms of two distinct types of biomass and their blends with lignite

Selin Armakan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combustion characteristics and kinetics of various mixtures of raw and torrefied rose pulp and red pine sawdust with Elbistan lignite. The study found that the torrefaction process improves the fuel/combustion performance of the mixtures, and lignite addition further enhances the combustion behavior. The activation energy of the samples decreased with the torrefaction process.

A review on buildings energy information: Trends, end-uses, fuels and drivers

M. Gonzalez-Torres et al.

Summary: Buildings contribute significantly to climate change, but there is a lack of reliable and consistent data for the development and evaluation of mitigation policies. Residential buildings have the highest energy consumption, with HVAC systems being the main source. Electrification has the potential to mitigate climate change if renewable power is promoted, but global cooperation is needed to break the link between economic growth, urbanization, and energy consumption in developing nations.

Biomass Torrefaction Process, Product Properties, Reactor Types, and Moving Bed Reactor Design Concepts

Jaya Shankar Tumuluru et al.

Summary: Torrefaction is a thermal pretreatment process that improves the physical properties and energy content of biomass. The process reduces moisture, increases energy content, and makes the biomass more hydrophobic and easier to grind. Despite its advantages, challenges with reactor design and product quality have slowed down the commercialization of torrefaction technology.

Sustainable Drying and Torrefaction Processes of Miscanthus for Use as a Pelletized Solid Biofuel and Biocarbon-Carrier for Fertilizers

Szymon Szufa et al.

Summary: Miscanthus is resistant to dry, frosty winters and gives higher yields compared to native species in Poland and most European Union countries. Laboratory tests show that drying temperature and moisture level affect pellet quality, while the optimum torrefaction temperature for economic and mass loss ratio perspective is around 300-340 degrees C.

Production of solid biofuels from organic waste in developing countries: A review from sustainability and economic feasibility perspectives

Lina S. Angulo-Mosquera et al.

Summary: The growing world population and energy demand have led to the exploration of cleaner energy forms, with solid biofuels emerging as a sustainable energy source for both developed and developing countries. This review focuses on discussing the characteristics and advantages of solid biofuels, analyzing the required pretreatments and thermal treatments, comparing them with traditional fossil fuels, and addressing issues of sustainability and economic feasibility. New methodologies such as Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment and certification schemes like RSB, IDB Sustainability Scorecard, and RSPO are examined as efforts to achieve sustainability in the biofuel industry.

The effect of raw material moisture and particle size on agri-pellet production parameters and physical properties: A case study for greenhouse melon residues

Hasan Yilmaz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the pelletizing conditions and pellet properties of melon stalks from greenhouse residues that can be biomass raw materials. The results showed that the pellet physical properties were significantly affected by pelletizing moisture, with moisture content, bulk density, single pellet density, and durability index being influenced. Particle size only affected bulk density.

Temporal and spatial evolution of biochar chemical structure during biomass pellet pyrolysis from the insights of micro-Raman spectroscopy

Yuanjing Chen et al.

Summary: The study revealed two stages of pellet pyrolysis: the decomposition of raw biomass and the condensation reactions of aromatic ring systems. The axial and radial heterogeneity of char chemical structure is mainly caused by heat transfer during uniform heating of the whole pellet, while mass transfer can eliminate this heterogeneity through volatile-char interaction. The combined effects of heat and mass transfer lead to a heterogeneity in pellet char chemical structure.
