Physical and Chemical Properties of Acacia mangium Lignin Isolated from Pulp Mill Byproduct for Potential Application in Wood Composites

Nissa Nurfajrin Solihat et al.

Summary: Efficient isolation and understanding of lignin properties are crucial for the effective valorization of lignin as a renewable feedstock for producing bio-based chemicals. This study successfully isolated lignin from black liquor using dilute acid precipitation and fractionation methods. The physical and chemical characteristics of the lignin were analyzed, revealing the effects of fractionation on lignin morphology. These findings have important implications for the industrial application of lignin in manufacturing improved wood-based composites.

Facile extraction and characterization of cellulose nanocrystals from agricultural waste sugarcane straw

Shuyu Lu et al.

Summary: The study focused on utilizing sugarcane straw to obtain pure cellulose and subsequently prepare CNCs with desirable properties. Alkali-treated fibers showed high cellulose content and smooth fibrous structure, while CNCs isolated through sulfuric acid hydrolysis had specific dimensions and improved anionic charge after short-term ultrasonication. Overall, the results suggest the potential for utilizing sugarcane straw in CNCs preparation and possible applications.

Conversion of agro-industrial wastes of sorghum bagasse and molasses into lightweight roof tile composite

Alifah Syahfitri et al.

Summary: This study successfully manufactured lightweight roof tiles using biomass of sorghum and molasses, and analyzed the effects of molasses content and particle size of sorghum on the properties of the tiles. The results showed that a combination of 20% molasses-based adhesive content and a 4-20 mesh size of sorghum particles could produce lightweight composite roof tiles with proper physical and mechanical properties according to the standard.
