The Association Between Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and Metabolic Syndrome in Adolescents: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Leyi Fu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in adolescents. The results showed that adolescents with PCOS were more than three times as likely to have MetS compared to controls. Obese adolescents with PCOS also had a higher risk of MetS compared to those with obesity but without PCOS. Blood pressure and lipid metabolism were found to be affected in adolescents with PCOS, indicating that PCOS could increase the frequency of MetS by influencing these factors independent of obesity.

Genetic contribution between APE1 variants in polycystic ovarian syndrome

Johara Al-Mutawa

Summary: This study investigated the effects of -656 T > G and 1349 T > G single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the APE1 gene on polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in Saudi women. The results showed that the 1349 T > G SNP was associated with PCOS, while the -656 SNP had no favorable effect on the APE1 gene.

Transcriptomic survey of key reproductive and metabolic tissues in mouse models of polycystic ovary syndrome

Yu Pei et al.

Summary: Excessive androgen production and obesity play a key role in the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Various mouse models, including prenatal androgenized, peripubertal androgenized, overexpression of nerve growth factor in theca cells, and diet-induced maternal obesity, were used to study PCOS. Transcriptome analysis revealed differentially expressed genes in the hypothalamus, adipose tissue, ovary, and oocytes, with the ovaries and adipose tissues showing the most significant changes. The Ms4a6e gene, found in all mouse models and in women with PCOS, suggests a conserved disease function in PCOS.

The hepato-ovarian axis: genetic evidence for a causal association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and polycystic ovary syndrome

Dong Liu et al.

Summary: This study used Mendelian randomization analysis to investigate the causal association between NAFLD and PCOS. The results suggest that genetically predicted NAFLD is associated with a higher risk of developing PCOS, and fasting insulin and sex hormones may mediate the link between the two.

Astaxanthin treatment ameliorates ER stress in polycystic ovary syndrome patients: a randomized clinical trial

Masoome Jabarpour et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that astaxanthin (ASX), a natural carotenoid compound found in seafood and microorganisms, may have therapeutic effects for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The results showed that ASX could improve endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in PCOS patients. Additionally, ASX increased the total antioxidant capacity in follicular fluid and improved the quality of oocytes, embryos, and oocyte maturity.

HDL-Associated Proteins in Subjects with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Proteomic Study

Alexandra E. E. Butler et al.

Summary: The levels of serum lipoproteins, except HDL-C, are increased in PCOS, possibly due to obesity and insulin resistance. Proteomic analysis showed higher levels of ApoE, C3, and HCFII, as well as lower levels of ApoM in PCOS. These dysregulations in lipoprotein metabolism may contribute to a more atherogenic profile and increased cardiovascular risk in PCOS.

Circulating miRNAs in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Longitudinal Cohort Study

Pernille B. Udesen et al.

Summary: In a 6-year follow-up study, it was found that the levels of certain miRNAs in women with PCOS changed, indicating a shift towards a less hyperandrogenic profile. These findings contribute to our understanding of PCOS and provide potential biomarkers for future research.

Regulatory effects of ketogenic diet on the inflammatory response in obese Saudi women

Nada Alkhorayef et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the impact of a ketogenic diet (KD) on anthropometric indices and abnormal regulation of inflammatory activities in obese Saudi women. The 8-week KD resulted in significant improvements in weight loss, BMI, waist circumference, and levels of the inflammatory cytokine IL-1b. These findings suggest that KD may be beneficial in alleviating the severity of chronic inflammatory disorders associated with obesity.

Leptin gene polymorphism Rs7799039; G2548A, metabolic and oxidative stress markers in polycystic ovarian syndrome

Shilpa S. Shetty et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between leptin gene polymorphism and metabolic, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). The results suggest that there are significant differences in body mass index, leptin, and inflammatory markers between the PCOS group and the control group, indicating that the leptin gene may play an important role in PCOS.
