Surface chemistry and porosity engineering through etching reveal ultrafast oxygen reduction kinetics below 400°C in B-site exposed (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 thin-films

Matias Acosta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of surface chemistry and mesoporous structuring on oxygen exchange by using an etching process with acetic acid. The results show that increasing the surface exposure of transition metal cations and the active area through mesoporous structuring can enhance the oxygen exchange kinetics, leading to optimized energy device performance.

Effect of Gd-doped ceria infiltration into Ni-YSZ on reversible solid oxide cell operation

Jerren Grimes et al.

Summary: Infiltration of gadolinium doped ceria (GDC) has been shown to significantly improve the performance and stability of solid oxide electrolysis cells. It reduces the initial cell resistance and limits degradation, resulting in enhanced cell stability. The infiltrated GDC nanoparticles mitigate Ni particle coarsening in the Ni-YSZ electrode, further contributing to improved cell performance.

Performance and Durability of Reversible Solid Oxide Cells with Nano-electrocatalysts Infiltrated Electrodes

Miao Yu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on improving the durability of Ni/yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) fuel electrode-supported solid oxide cells under reversible operation mode by infiltrating nano-sized electrocatalysts into both electrodes. The results show that infiltrating nano-electrocatalysts into both electrodes is an effective solution to boost cell performance and durability under reversible operation.

Ni migration of Ni-YSZ electrode in solid oxide electrolysis cell: An integrated model study

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive numerical study, it was found that nickel depletion in the fuel electrode of SOEC can lead to nickel phase coarsening, consequently reducing the electrochemical performance of the electrode. Increasing the wettability of the nickel phase can effectively mitigate the reduction of active reaction sites caused by nickel coarsening.

Correlating Surface Crystal Orientation and Gas Kinetics in Perovskite Oxide Electrodes

Ran Gao et al.

Summary: The efficiency of solid-oxide fuel cells and electrolyzers is determined by solid-gas interactions at electrode surfaces. The study on La0.8Sr0.2Co0.2Fe0.8O3 reveals a strong correlation between surface-gas kinetics and crystal orientation of perovskite electrodes, with (111)-oriented surfaces showing higher activity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrical conductivity relaxation measurements indicate a surface-orientation dependency of gas-exchange kinetics, with all surfaces having the same reaction mechanisms and rate-limiting steps.

A high-entropy manganite in an ordered nanocomposite for long-term application in solid oxide cells

F. Baiutti et al.

Summary: The implementation of nano-engineered composite oxides has led to the development of a novel class of functional materials with enhanced electrochemical properties. A vertically aligned nanocomposite of lanthanum strontium manganite and doped ceria has been realized, showing high electrochemical activity and suppressed dopant segregation. The ordered mesostructure of the material allows for fast oxygen diffusion pathways, making it suitable for functional layers in high-temperature energy conversion devices.
