Surface Stoichiometry Control of Colloidal Heterostructured Quantum Dots for High-Performance Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Generation

Yi Tao et al.

Summary: A facile strategy of tuning the surface stoichiometry of heterostructured quantum dots (QDs) is reported to regulate the recombination and transfer of interfacial charges, which greatly improves the photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation. The research demonstrates that PEC cells based on CdSe-(SexS1-x)(4)-(CdS)(2) core/shell QDs with a proper S-surface/Cd-surface ratio exhibit significantly enhanced photocurrent density. This work presents a simple surface engineering strategy for improving the performance of QDs PEC cells and provides an efficient method to guide the surface design of QDs for other optoelectronic devices.

Hydrothermal synthesis of water-soluble Mn- and Cu-doped CdSe quantum dots with multi-shell structures and their photoluminescence properties

Hisaaki Nishimura et al.

Summary: The optical properties of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) can be modified by doping with transition metal ions. In this study, water-soluble CdSe/ZnS:Mn/ZnS QDs with a core/shell/shell structure were synthesized and different photoluminescence behaviors were observed with different core sizes. Furthermore, CdSe/ZnS:Cu/ZnS and ZnSe/ZnS:Cu/ZnS nanoparticles were successfully synthesized, and distinct luminescence related to Cu was observed. These findings suggest that the core/shell/shell QD structure with doping in the shell is a versatile approach for synthesizing doped QDs.

Rational design of eco-friendly Mn-doped nonstoichiometric CuInSe/ZnSe core/shell quantum dots for boosted photoelectrochemical efficiency

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: Colloidal core/shell quantum dots (QDs) with environmentally friendly features and controllable optoelectronic properties have great potential in emerging solar technologies. In this research, CuInSe (CISe)/ZnSe core/shell QDs were rationally designed and tailored by Mn doping and stoichiometric optimization. The findings indicate that Mn doping in In-rich CISe/ZnSe core/shell QDs can effectively engineer the charge kinetics inside the QDs, enabling efficient charge transfer and reducing recombination. The optimized Mn-doped In-rich CISe/ZnSe core/shell QDs exhibited significantly improved photocurrent density in a solar-driven photoelectrochemical device compared to the pristine CISe/ZnSe core/shell QDs. Transition metal doping in green nonstoichiometric core/shell QDs could provide a new strategy for achieving high-efficiency solar energy conversion applications.

Environmentally friendly, highly efficient, and large stokes shift-emitting ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS core/shell quantum dots for luminescent solar concentrators

Nyamsuren Byambasuren et al.

Summary: In this study, high-quality heavy-metal-free orange light-emitting ZnSe:Mn2+/ZnS doped-core/shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized using a nucleation doping strategy. The QDs exhibited high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) and were embedded in a polymer matrix to fabricate a transparent film with bright orange light emission. These QDs show promise for application in luminescent solar concentrators.

Heterostructured core/gradient multi-shell quantum dots for high-performance and durable photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation

Kanghong Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel core/multiple-shell architecture based on CdSe/CdS/ZnS QDs to enhance the performance of photoelectrochemical (PEC) hydrogen generation devices. The optimized shell composition with gradient layers reduces surface traps and defects of QDs, while suppressing exciton recombination. The PEC device exhibited outstanding photocurrent density and excellent stability under one sun illumination, showing potential for commercial development.

Efficient and stable photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation using optimized colloidal heterostructured quantum dots

Hui Zhang et al.

Summary: By tuning the shell thickness in colloidal CdS/CdSe core/shell QDs, the light absorption range can be broadened and the rate of photoelectron separation and transport can be enhanced. The band alignment in this heterostructured system can be controlled from quasi type-II to inverted type-I by changing the shell thickness, as shown by theoretical modeling.

Ultrafast Quenching of Excitons in the ZnxCd1-xS/ZnS Quantum Dots Doped with Mn2+ through Charge Transfer Intermediates Results in Manganese Luminescence

Dmitry Cherepanov et al.

Summary: A specific time-delayed Stark peak was observed in the spectra of manganese-doped alloy quantum dots, indicating the development of an electric field and charge transfer intermediates leading to ultrafast Mn2+ excitation. A kinetic scheme was proposed to explain the excitation of Mn2+ through the reduction of Mn2+ by a 1Se electron and subsequent oxidation of Mn1+ with a hole.

Regulation of the photogenerated carrier transfer process during photoelectrochemical water splitting: A review

Yaping Zhang et al.

Summary: Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is an ideal technology to produce hydrogen, with photogenerated carrier migration playing a crucial role in the process. Various methods have been developed to regulate photogenerated hot carriers, such as p-n junction, unique transfer nanochannel, tandem nanostructure and Z-Scheme transfer structure, showing great potential for high-efficient PEC water splitting without applied bias voltage.
