Overcoming the obstacles of current photodynamic therapy in tumors using nanoparticles

Donghyun Lee et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) faces challenges in tumor treatment, including drug delivery, light delivery, and tumor microenvironment. Nanoparticles have shown promising potential to overcome these challenges as drug carriers. Various approaches such as physicochemical optimization, ligand modification, and stimuli-responsive release have been explored in experiments, but more research is needed.

Engineering the Compositional Architecture of Core-Shell Upconverting Lanthanide-Doped Nanoparticles for Optimal Luminescent Donor in Resonance Energy Transfer: The Effects of Energy Migration and Storage

Aleksandra Pilch-Wrobel et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the designed virtual core-shell NP models for UCNPs and proposes new designs of UCNPs as FRET donors. The luminescence kinetics of UCNP donors during RET and new disparity measurements are discussed. These studies help understand the energy transfer and migration between lanthanide ion dopants in UCNPs and how the core-shell architecture affects their performance as FRET donors to organic acceptor dyes.

Internal light source for deep photodynamic therapy

Buhong Li et al.

Summary: The limited penetration depth of visible light has hindered photodynamic therapy (PDT) for deep-seated lesions. However, researchers have recently developed a genetically-encoded NanoLuc-miniSOG with an internal light source for self-excitation, which greatly benefits deep PDT.

An NIR dual-emitting/absorbing inorganic compact pair: A self-calibrating LRET system for homogeneous virus detection

Dongkyu Kang et al.

Summary: A near-infrared self-calibrating luminescence resonance energy transfer system was developed for background-free detection in homogeneous sandwich-immunoassays. The inorganic LRET pair of NIR dual-emitting lanthanide-doped nanoparticles and NIR-absorbing lanthanide-doped nanoparticles showed stable detection of AIV nucleoproteins with a 0.38 pM limit of detection.

NIR-II emissive AIEgen photosensitizers enable ultrasensitive imaging-guided surgery and phototherapy to fully inhibit orthotopic hepatic tumors

Ruizhen Jia et al.

Summary: NIR-II AIEgen photosensitizers show bright and sharp emission for imaging-guided surgery and phototherapy of primary liver tumors, with efficient generation of reactive oxygen species for photodynamic therapy. They can be used for both early-stage tumor surgery and 'downstaging' therapy, leading to complete inhibition of tumors without recurrence and minimal side effects.

Tailoring photosensitive ROS for advanced photodynamic therapy

Duc Loc Sai et al.

Summary: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) utilizes photosensitive drugs that generate reactive oxygen species when exposed to light, killing cancer cells. Recent advancements in protein-based photosensitive drugs, nanomaterials, and luminescence are improving the effectiveness of PDT. Researchers are focusing on developing strategies to enhance tumor treatment outcomes and address challenges such as drug side effects and light delivery.

Spectrophotometric assays for evaluation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) in serum: general concepts and applications in dogs and humans

Camila Peres Rubio et al.

Summary: ROS are reactive compounds derived from oxygen, and excessive ROS can cause oxidative damage to biological macromolecules, leading to different diseases. Various assays have been developed for ROS evaluation in the past 30 years, with this article focusing on spectrophotometric methods used in serum, particularly in dogs, and providing examples of their applications with comparative information on humans.
