Unifying the 6D N = (1,1) string landscape

Bernardo Fraiman et al.

Summary: We propose an organizing principle for string theory moduli spaces in six dimensions with N = (1, 1) using a rank reduction map. This principle encompasses all known constructions, including cyclic and non-cyclic orbifolds. We establish a connection between cyclic orbifolds and meromorphic 2D (s)CFTs with c = 24 (c = 12) and show how they encode gauge symmetry enhancement in 6D theories. The framework suggests the existence of 47 moduli spaces, with only 17 having known string constructions.

Compactness of brane moduli and the String Lamppost Principle in d > 6

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the validity of the String Lamppost Principle for supersymmetric theories in d > 6, by using the compactness and connectedness of the moduli space of small instantons, as well as the classification of the associated Coulomb branch.

Taming the landscape of effective theories

Thomas W. Grimm

Summary: We introduce a generalized notion of finiteness and propose a Tameness Conjecture for effective theories coupled to quantum gravity. We provide evidence for this conjecture by studying various effective theories arising from string theory compactifications using recent advances in tame geometry. The finiteness of self-dual flux vacua in F-theory is discussed as the strongest evidence for the Tameness Conjecture.

Cobordism conjecture, anomalies, and the String Lamppost Principle

Miguel Montero et al.

Summary: We explored triviality of cobordism classes and anomaly cancellation in supergravity theories in d > 6, leading to the existence of defects called I-folds. The compactification conditions to lower dimensions with these defects being anomaly-free impose restrictions on higher dimensional theories, particularly on the allowed rank of gauge groups. These restrictions explain observed limitations in string theory constructions, with the solutions in eight and nine dimensions matching string theory compactifications.Constraints on the global structure of the gauge group in eight and nine dimensions were also derived using these techniques.

Stringy tachyonic instabilities of non-supersymmetric Ricci flat backgrounds

Bobby Samir Acharya et al.

Summary: Recent conjectures suggest that there may be instabilities in superstring/M-theory compactified on compact Ricci flat manifolds, especially when the metrics do not have special holonomy. By using worldsheet conformal field theory to study these instabilities in Type II superstring theories on compact, Ricci flat, spin 3-manififolds, we observe the appearance of stringy tachyons at small radii and negative (1-loop) vacuum energy density at large radii. Further discussion on higher dimensions is also briefly mentioned.

A worldsheet perspective on heterotic T-duality orbifolds

Stefan Groot Nibbelink

Summary: This paper discusses asymmetric heterotic orbifolds from the worldsheet perspective, presenting Buscher's gauging of a theory of D compact bosons and Tseytlin's duality covariant description. The residual of gauge symmetry is utilized to remove doubled constant zero modes, resulting in physical target space coordinates. The extension of this description to the heterotic theory is straightforward, with explicit methods outlined for obtaining generalized metrics invariant under T-duality orbifold actions.
