Superluminal anisotropic propagation and wavefront splitting on tilted and boosted braneworlds

Alexios P. Polychronakos

Summary: Braneworlds exhibit superluminal propagation of fields through an extra compact dimension, which can be irreducibly anisotropic or isotropic depending on the motion and orientation of the brane. Boosted observers on the brane will observe a wavefront splitting into two components, one propagating forward and the other backward in time at superluminal speeds. Despite these effects, causality is not violated and no tachyons are present. The detection of anisotropic superluminal propagation velocities in astrophysics would indicate the existence of extra compactified dimensions.

Holographic duals of evaporating black holes

Roberto Emparan et al.

Summary: We describe the dynamical evaporation of a black hole as its classical evolution in an Anti-de Sitter braneworld. The intersection of the horizon of a bulk black hole with the brane gives the classical bulk dual of a black hole coupled to quantum conformal fields. The evaporation occurs when the bulk horizon slides off the brane and the horizon on the brane shrinks.

Quantum singularities

Raphael Bousso et al.

Summary: Two spatial regions B and R are hyperentangled if the generalized entropy satisfies SB?R gen < SRgen. If in addition all future (or all past) directed inward null shape deformations of B decrease SB?R gen, then the causal development of B, with R held fixed, must be incomplete. The result eliminates the null energy condition from the assumptions of a recently proven singularity theorem, instead assuming a quantum version of the Bousso bound. Our theorem predicts a singularity in the past causal development of the black hole interior, even though the classical spacetime is nonsingular in the past. The quantum singularities predicted by our theorem are an obstruction to further semiclassical evolution, generalizing the singularities of classical general relativity.

Back to the future: Causality on a moving braneworld

Brian Greene et al.

Summary: Observers on a partially compactified Lorentz invariant bulk spacetime, such as M4 x S1, can send signals along the brane that are instantaneous or even travel backward in time when executing appropriate motion. However, causality remains intact in the braneworld. These results, reported in Greene et al. [Superluminal propagation on a moving braneworld, Phys. Rev. D 106, 085001 (2022)], are established through classical analysis and further examined in terms of quantum mechanical microcausality. One implication is the potential for real-time communication across arbitrarily large distances.

Homology conditions for RT surfaces in double holography

Dominik Neuenfeld

Summary: This study explores the relationship between a novel entropy formula and semi-classical entropy in the context of doubly-holographic models. It discusses the correct homology constraint for Ryu-Takayanagi surfaces and the possibility of disagreement in the von Neumann entropies of fixed subregions in both descriptions. The research also speculates on the connection between double-holography and black hole complementarity.

Inconsistency of islands in theories with long-range gravity

Hao Geng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the potential problems of islands in standard theories of massless gravity. Islands are entanglement wedges disconnected from the asymptotic region, and in some known examples, the tension with the gravitational law is resolved by the presence of massive gravitons. Additionally, the authors derive some consistency conditions that islands in decoupled systems must satisfy.

Causal structures and nonlocality in double holography

Hidetoshi Omiya et al.

Summary: This paper studies causal structures in generic double holographic setups and finds that the causal structure in the bulk picture is compatible with causality in the BCFT picture. However, consistency with the bulk causal structure requires the effective theory in the intermediate picture to contain a special type of super-luminal and nonlocal effect. The results of this study are important for understanding the subregion correspondences in double holography and the fundamental origins of nonlocality.

Bounds on gravitational brane couplings and tomography in AdS3 black hole microstates

Ji Hoon Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the information theoretic properties of planar black hole microstates in 2 + 1 dimensional asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetime. The von Neumann entropy of subregions in the dual CFT shows a time-dependent phase, corresponding to the appearance of quantum extremal islands in the brane description. The addition of dilaton gravity on the brane affects the propagation of information in the dual CFT state. Information theoretic bounds on the growth of entanglement entropy place constraints on the allowed values of the couplings on the brane. Furthermore, the study explores how subleading corrections to the entanglement velocity can provide information about the properties of the brane and any localized gravitational dynamics.

Double holography in string theory

Andreas Karch et al.

Summary: We develop the notion of double holography in Type IIB string theory realizations of braneworld models. Based on the concrete BCFTs and their brane construction, we provide microscopic realizations of the intermediate holographic description. By discussing the causal structures in the full BCFT duals and intermediate descriptions, we confirm qualitative features found in the bottom-up models but also suggest a refinement of their interpretation.

Superluminal propagation on a moving braneworld

Brian Greene et al.

Summary: We investigate a braneworld scenario and find the possibility of superluminal propagation when the brane is in motion. By measuring bulk fields, we can observe the imprint of extra dimensions even when the brane is at rest. Possible observational tests and cosmological applications are also mentioned.

Radial cutoffs and holographic entanglement

Brianna Grado-White et al.

Summary: An alternative definition of cutoff-holographic entropy using a restricted maximin prescription anchored to a codimension 2 cutoff surface is proposed in the presence of a radial cutoff. For bulk solutions that respect the null energy condition, the resulting areas satisfy strong sub-additivity, entanglement wedge nesting, and monogamy of mutual information, in parallel with cutoff free results in AdS, even if the cutoff surface is not convex.

T(T)over-bar and the mirage of a bulk cutoff

Monica Guica et al.

Summary: The study uses the variational principle approach to derive the large N holographic dictionary for two-dimensional T(T) over bar-deformed CFTs, revealing mixed boundary conditions for the non dynamical graviton and the impact of matter fields. The connection between the mixed boundary conditions and the radial bulk cutoff is lost in the presence of matter fields, with only the former correctly reproducing the energy of the bulk configuration.

BCFT entanglement entropy at large central charge and the black hole interior

James Sully et al.

Summary: This paper reproduces holographic results through direct (B)CFT calculations. Using the replica method, the entropies are related to correlation functions of twist operators in a Euclidean BCFT. These transitions between channels lead to the holographically observed phase transitions in entropies.
