Methanation of CO/CO2 for power to methane process: Fundamentals, status, and perspectives

Jie Ren et al.

Summary: Power-to-methane (P2M) processes convert renewable energy into H2 and then into other valuable chemicals using active catalysts, making them an effective solution for energy storage. However, the fluctuating electricity from intermittent renewable energy requires robust heterogeneous catalysts to handle the changing reactant composition. This review aims to classify CO/CO2 methanation fundamentals and status, identify the pathways with different catalysts, and discuss the challenges and future prospects of CO2 or CO methanation. Additionally, the advantages and ongoing industrialization projects of P2M are summarized.

A robust fluorine-containing ceramic cathode for direct CO2 electrolysis in solid oxide electrolysis cells

Shaowei Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel strategy of doping F into the O-site of perovskite LSF is proposed to enhance the electrolytic performance and chemical stability in direct CO2 electrolysis. The doping promotes the formation of oxygen vacancies, increases oxygen vacancy concentration, and improves the CO2 adsorption capability. It also significantly improves the kinetics of the CO2 reduction reaction, resulting in a highly efficient and durable electrolysis cell.

Surface oxidation of Ni-cermet electrodes by CO2 and H2O and how to moderate it

Dingkai Chen et al.

Summary: The oxidation behavior of nickel in H2O and CO2 atmospheres on different ceramic metal electrodes was studied. It was found that the resistance of nickel to oxidation depends on the ceramic type, with Ni-GDC showing higher resistance to CO2 oxidation compared to Ni-YSZ. Modifying the electrode surface with ceria nanoparticles can enhance its resistance to CO2 oxidation, offering a promising fabrication strategy for high-performance solid oxide electrolysis cells for CO2 conversion.

Probing charge transfer under external bias at Cu/SrTiO3 heterojunction

Lei Fu et al.

Summary: Supported metal-metal oxide heterojunctions are widely used in catalysts for energy conversion and storage devices. The interaction between metal and supports is crucial for developing new catalysts. This study investigates the effect of an external electric field and circumstances on the charge transfer within a Cu/SrTiO3 heterojunction. The results show that the external electric field can switch the specific behavior of charge transfer, and the circumstances surrounding the heterojunction also influence charge transfer.

In-situ exsolution of Ni nanoparticles to achieve an active and stable solid oxide fuel cell anode catalyst on A-site deficient La0.4Sr0.4Ti0.94Ni0.06O3-3

Jong Jun Lee et al.

Summary: (La,Sr)TiO3 is a promising anode material for solid oxide fuel cells due to its high electronic conductivity and superior phase stability, but its low catalytic activity is a major obstacle. Exsolution of Ni nanoparticles on Ni-doped A-site deficient La0.4Sr0.4TiO3-3 was found to significantly improve the electrocatalytic activity and performance of SOFCs, leading to higher power density and enhanced stability. These results highlight the effectiveness of exsolution in enhancing the electrocatalytic activity of perovskite materials like (La,Sr)TiO3.

Fano resonance and relaxor behavior in Pr doped SrTiO3: A Raman spectroscopic investigation

Vivek Dwij et al.

Summary: The phenomenon of relaxor ferroelectrics was studied by detailed Raman spectroscopy on polycrystalline Sr1-xPrxTiO3 samples. The polar mode was observed at very high temperatures, with formation of short range correlations and PNRs at 505 K. Below 505 K, anomalous softening of the polar mode, Fano resonance, and changes in octahedral tilt angle indicated the growth of local polar order and structural phase transition.
