Advances in spectrophotometric determination of Chromium(III) and Chromium(VI) in water: a review

Nisha Dawra et al.

Summary: Due to the versatile usage and applications of chromium compounds in the industry worldwide, the presence of hazardous Cr(VI) and less harmful Cr(III) ions in wastewater poses a serious threat to the ecosystem and human health. Therefore, the development of sensitive, selective, accurate, and cost-effective methods for detecting and determining these ions is of utmost importance. This review summarizes the use of spectrophotometric methods for determining Cr(VI) and Cr(III) ions in aqueous solutions, as well as the use of chemical reagents like DPC for the determination of hazardous chromium ions in water samples. It also discusses the application of DPC reagent in advanced technologies such as microfluidic detection systems, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices, and 3D printed devices with online spectrophotometric detection systems for onsite monitoring of water samples. Moreover, it describes different methods for the selective speciation and preconcentration of Cr(VI) ions in water samples with very low concentrations. The review also highlights emerging trends in the detection and determination of carcinogenic Cr(VI) ions involving novel technologies and various categories of nanomaterials.

Chromium contamination and effect on environmental health and its remediation: A sustainable approaches

Shiv Prasad et al.

Summary: Chromium is a critical trace element for human health, but contamination, particularly in the form of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], has increased in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to anthropogenic activities. Excessive exposure to chromium can lead to toxic health effects in humans and animals, while pollution negatively affects plant metabolic activities, reducing crop quality. Monitoring and implementing remediation technologies is essential to balance the environment and nature.
