A new visible light absorbing organic filter offers superior protection against pigmentation by wavelengths at the UVR-visible boundary region

Karl P. Lawrence et al.

Summary: Skin pigmentation can be induced by both solar ultraviolet radiation and visible light, and oxidative stress is believed to be the cause. The study highlights the need to improve photoprotection at the UVR-visible border and emphasizes the role of sunscreens as neutral density filters.

Photoprotection and skin irritation effect of hydrogels containing hydroalcoholic extract of red propolis: A natural pathway against skin cancer

Cinthia M. Batista et al.

Summary: This study describes the development of sunscreen formulations containing hydroalcoholic extract of red propolis, and evaluates the dermal sensitizing effect of the products. The formulations were found to be stable, but those with lower concentrations of HERP showed significant modifications during accelerated stability testing.

Selected Extracts from High Mountain Plants as Potential Sunscreens with Antioxidant Capacity

Juan C. Mejia-Giraldo et al.

Summary: The photoprotective and antioxidant activities of extracts from six plant species collected in a high mountain ecosystem at 3150 m.a.s.l. were evaluated. Among these extracts, the extract of B. antioquensis showed significant photoprotection against UVA-UVB and excellent antioxidant activity. This suggests that B. antioquensis extract could be a valuable source for new UV filters with broad spectrum protection and antioxidant properties.

UV Filters: Challenges and Prospects

Ana Jesus et al.

Summary: The use of sunscreens is a recommended practice to protect the skin from solar-induced damage. However, some UV filters have been found to have low photostability and potential toxicity. Therefore, it is important to develop new UV filters with improved safety and stability.

Iron oxides in novel skin care formulations attenuate blue light for enhanced protection against skin damage

Eric F. Bernstein et al.

Summary: This study found that sunscreens formulated with iron oxides can enhance protection against high-energy visible (HEV) light, especially when combined with zinc oxide. The formulations demonstrated a high level of HEV light attenuation across the tested wavelengths of 415-465 nm.

Natural components in sunscreens: Topical formulations with sun protection factor (SPF)

He Hailun et al.

Summary: Natural antioxidants as sunscreens have gained attention due to their protective effects against UV radiation, but their mechanisms of action and potential side effects still need further investigation. Ingredients extracted from plants, animals, microorganisms, and marine organisms can enhance the SPF values of natural sunscreens, but their regulatory effects on skin inflammation, barrier impairment, and aging caused by UV exposure require more research.

From Sea to Skin: Is There a Future for Natural Photoprotectants?

Alfonsina Milito et al.

Summary: The thinning of the ozone layer due to increased atmospheric pollution has worsened the negative effects of excessive exposure to solar ultraviolet radiation, making skin cancer a major public health concern. While sunscreens are the main solution to prevent skin damage, some synthetic compounds in them have been found to cause harm to marine ecosystems. Marine-derived natural products show promise as potential eco-friendly alternatives for human photoprotection, but further research is needed to fully explore their benefits.
