The association between vital signs and clinical outcomes in emergency department patients of different age categories

Summary: This study aimed to assess the association between initial vital signs and in-hospital mortality in different age categories. The results showed that there is no single cut-off for certain vital signs such as systolic blood pressure and peripheral oxygen saturation to determine the risk, and the impact of vital signs on mortality is greater in older patients. These findings have important implications for the interpretation of vital signs in existing risk stratification tools and acute care guidelines.

Missed nursing care in the critical care unit, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: A comparative cross-sectional study

Summary: This study describes and evaluates reported missed nursing care in critical care settings during different phases of the COVID-19 pandemic in Sweden. Findings suggest that the pandemic had a significant impact on the critical care workforce, with increased overtime hours and absences due to illness. However, the elements of missed nursing care were relatively unaffected, with most of the missed care being related to inadequate staffing, urgent situations, and a rise in patient volume.

Validation of the modified Skane emergency department assessment of patient load (mSEAL) model for emergency department crowding and comparison with international models; an observational study

Summary: In this study conducted at four emergency departments in Sweden, a modified SEAL (mSEAL) model was derived and validated, showing strong correlation with crowding based on workload assessments. The mSEAL model demonstrated good discriminatory capacity in measuring crowding and can help policymakers and researchers target its causes and effects. Additionally, Occupancy Rate and NEDOCS were identified as good alternatives to measure crowding based on workload in Swedish emergency departments.

Effects of nurse-to-patient ratio legislation on nurse staffing and patient mortality, readmissions, and length of stay: a prospective study in a panel of hospitals

Summary: The study found that implementing minimum nurse-to-patient ratio policies positively impacted nurse staffing and patient outcomes. After implementation, mortality rates significantly decreased in intervention hospitals, while readmissions increased in comparison hospitals, although the reduction in length of stay was more pronounced in intervention hospitals. Staffing improvements by one patient per nurse also led to reductions in mortality, readmissions, and length of stay.
