Integration of thin n-type nc-Si:H layers in the window-multilayer stack of heterojunction solar cells

Luca Antognini et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers performed experiments on the thickness and PH3 doping of nc-Si:H(n) layers to investigate their desirable characteristics along the growth direction. It was found that increasing the PH3 flow is necessary to improve the conductivity, but too high flows lead to amorphization of the layers. To overcome this, a thin a-Si:H(n) layer was integrated underneath the nc-Si:H(n) layer, and the impact of higher ITO doping and SiOx capping was also studied.

Contact Resistivity Measurements and their Applicability for Accurate Series Resistance Breakdown in Heterojunction Solar Cell

Luca Antognini et al.

Summary: In this study, accurate breakdown of series resistance (R-S) in a 2 cm x 2 cm screen-printed solar cell was performed using multiple approaches. Experimental observations differed from theoretical expectations, and the accuracy of different methods in predicting R-S and its trend varied. Practical differences between the methods were discussed and possible improvements were proposed.

Hole-Selective Front Contact Stack Enabling 24.1%-Efficient Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells

Mathieu Boccard et al.

Summary: This study discusses several modifications to improve the optoelectronic performance of window-layer stack in both-side-contacted silicon heterojunction solar cells, including replacing the P-type layer, front transparent electrode, capping with silicon-oxide film, and applying postfabrication electrical biasing treatment. Combining all these modifications enables the fabrication of a highly transparent and electrically well-performing window-layer stack, leading to a screen-printed silicon heterojunction solar cell with 24.1% efficiency. Paths towards industrialization and further improvements are also discussed.

A silicon carbide-based highly transparent passivating contact for crystalline silicon solar cells approaching efficiencies of 24%

Malte Koehler et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a passivating contact based on a double layer of nanocrystalline silicon carbide that combines high conductivity, excellent surface passivation, and high optical transparency for silicon solar cells. This contact design results in improved short-circuit current density, fill factor, and efficiency, while avoiding the need for additional hydrogenation or high-temperature post-deposition annealing steps, offering pathways towards conversion efficiencies of 26%.

Transparent-conductive-oxide-free front contacts for high-efficiency silicon heterojunction solar cells

Shenghao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, TCO layers are substituted by utilizing lateral conduction of c-Si absorber in SHJ solar cells, achieving a TCO-free design with low series resistivity and good fill factor. Suppressing metal diffusion into a-Si:H layer through ozone treatment at the a-Si:H/metal interface improves passivation quality without increasing contact resistivity, enabling SHJ solar cells with TCO-free front contacts to achieve efficiencies exceeding 22%.

Advanced method for electrical characterization of carrier-selective passivating contacts using transfer-length-method measurements under variable illumination

L. -L. Senaud et al.

Summary: Carrier-selective passivating contacts are crucial for practical efficiency limits in c-Si solar cells, but transport losses affecting carrier collection still need to be addressed. A novel concept of "shell" and characterization methodology using TLM measurements was proposed to study charge-carrier transport in SHJ n-type contact stacks. The impact of illumination on contact resistivity was highlighted, underscoring the importance of measuring under maximum power point conditions for accurate characterization of solar cell transport losses.

Influence of the Dopant Gas Precursor in P-Type Nanocrystalline Silicon Layers on the Performance of Front Junction Heterojunction Solar Cells

Luca Antognini et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of different dopant sources on the layer properties and performance of silicon heterojunction solar cells. It was found that adjusting the flow of trimethyl boron (TMB) and BF3 can lead to different crystallinity and doping effects, impacting the efficiency and characteristics of the cells. This research highlights the importance of optimizing dopant sources for improved efficiency and performance in silicon heterojunction solar cells.
