Weakly Supervised Deep Nuclei Segmentation With Sparsely Annotated Bounding Boxes for DNA Image Cytometry

Yixiong Liang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel weakly supervised nuclei segmentation framework that utilizes sparsely annotated bounding boxes for segmentation without requiring segmentation labels. The framework integrates traditional image segmentation and self-training to achieve fully supervised instance segmentation. The method generates coarse masks and pseudo labels using the traditional segmentation and refines them with the help of a teacher model. Both teacher and student models are trained jointly using the refined masks, pseudo labels, and manually annotated bounding boxes. The proposed method outperforms existing weakly supervised methods on both datasets.

Cascade R-CNN: High Quality Object Detection and Instance Segmentation

Zhaowei Cai et al.

Summary: In object detection, the commonly used IoU threshold of 0.5 can lead to noisy detections, and performance may degrade for larger thresholds. The Cascade R-CNN architecture addresses this issue by training detectors sequentially with increasing IoU thresholds and eliminating quality mismatches at inference, resulting in state-of-the-art performance and significant improvement in high-quality detection across various datasets. The model is also generalized to instance segmentation, achieving nontrivial improvements over existing methods.
