Accumulation of Proline in Plants under Contaminated Soils-Are We on the Same Page?

Sofia Spormann et al.

Summary: Agricultural soil degradation is increasing at an alarming rate, influenced by climate change and intensified agricultural practices. Understanding the impacts of climate change and soil degradation on plant physiology is crucial for the development of effective strategies to mitigate crop productivity losses. Proline, an amino acid, has been recognized for its roles in plant cells under osmotic stress, showing a positive correlation between proline accumulation and tolerance to abiotic stress. However, recent studies question the assumption that proline accumulation always indicates improved stress resilience, suggesting the need for further biochemical and physiological endpoints.

Positive Interaction of Selenium Nanoparticles and Olive Solid Waste on Vanadium-Stressed Soybean Plant

Mha Albqmi et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the improvement in soybean plants' tolerance against vanadium-induced stress through the application of olive solid waste (OSW) and selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs). The results of a pot experiment showed that the combined treatment of Se-NPs + OSW had positive effects on enhancing plant stress tolerance. This was achieved through improvements in photosynthetic parameters, metabolic pathways, non-enzymatic antioxidant metabolites, antioxidant enzymes, and biochemical components, resulting in increased plant biomass.

Synergistic Impacts of Plant-Growth-Promoting Bacteria and Selenium Nanoparticles on Improving the Nutritional Value and Biological Activities of Three Cultivars of Brassica Sprouts

Hamada AbdElgawad et al.

Summary: Due to the growing world population and increasing environmental stress, improving the production, nutritional quality, and pharmaceutical applications of plants have become an urgent need. In this study, seed priming with plant-growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) and selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) was used to investigate their impact on the chemical and biological properties of three Brassica oleracea cultivars. The results showed that seed treatments increased sprout growth, glucosinolate accumulation, and myrosinase activity. Antioxidant and antibacterial activities were also enhanced in the treated cultivars, although some sensitivity to certain bacteria and fungi was observed.

Elevated CO2 Differentially Mitigated Oxidative Stress Induced by Indium Oxide Nanoparticles in Young and Old Leaves of C3 and C4 Crops

Ibrahim I. Shabbaj et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxicity of In2O3-NPs in C3 and C4 plants and the mitigating effects of eCO(2). It found that In2O3-NPs significantly reduced growth and photosynthesis, induced oxidative damage, and impaired nutrient homeostasis in plants. However, eCO(2) alleviated these effects and improved plant growth and nutrient uptake. The study also highlighted the role of SOD in mitigating the hazardous effects of In2O3-NPs.

Summary: The research explores how plant growth-promoting bacterial (PGPB) inoculants and chemical fertilizers affect rhizosphere and root endophytic bacterial communities in durum wheat under environmental stress. Results indicate that endophytic bacterial communities are more sensitive to (bio-) fertilization treatments, particularly influenced by PGPB inoculation, and are associated with improved grain yield and photosynthetic capacity.

Fire effects on the distribution and bioavailability of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in agricultural soils

Roberto Terzano et al.

Summary: Uncontrolled fires in forest and agricultural areas are increasingly occurring due to rising aridity and global warming. These fires can have a dramatic impact on soil properties and elements biogeochemistry, particularly affecting potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and their availability to plants and microorganisms in agricultural soils. Research on the effects of fires on PTEs distribution and speciation in soils is essential for understanding and managing the risks posed by these events on the food chain.

Responses of soil microbial community to combination pollution of galaxolide and cadmium

Ze Lv et al.

Summary: The combined pollution of galaxolide (HHCB) and cadmium (Cd) had a greater influence on the soil microbial community than the single pollution of HHCB, as measured by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis. Addition of Cd led to a significant decrease in total microbial biomass and Gram-positive/Gram-negative bacteria ratio, while increasing the bacteria/fungi ratio. Principal component analysis (PCA) and redundancy analysis (RDA) confirmed that the microbial community structure was significantly altered by the combined effects of HHCB and Cd.
