Single-cell RNA sequencing provides a high-resolution roadmap for understanding the multicellular compartmentation of specialized metabolism

Sijie Sun et al.

Summary: This study used single-cell transcriptomics to investigate the spatial organization of MIA metabolism in Catharanthus roseus leaves. The results updated the model of MIA biosynthesis and identified three cell types involved in the MIA pathway. The study also predicted several essential transporters responsible for shuttling MIA intermediates between different cellular compartments, providing potential targets for increasing the yields of valuable MIAs through metabolic engineering and synthetic biology.

Codon usage bias

Sujatha Thankeswaran Parvathy et al.

Summary: Codon usage bias is a common phenomenon observed in bacteria, plants, and animals, with consistent and characteristic patterns across different species and genes. The formation of codon bias is influenced by factors such as genome composition, gene expression levels, and gene length. Understanding codon usage bias can provide insights into phylogenetic relationships and gene evolution among organisms.

Polymer-coated carbon nanotube hybrids with functional peptides for gene delivery into plant mitochondria

Simon Sau Yin Law et al.

Summary: The delivery of DNA into intact plant mitochondria through a carbon nanotube-polymer hybrid modified with functional peptides has been achieved with significantly higher efficiency. This technique holds potential for genetic engineering and stable transformation of mitochondrial genomes, as well as broad applications in plant bioengineering through the flexibility of the polymer layer for conjugation with other peptides and cargo targeting other organelles.

De Novo Hybrid Assembly of the Salvia miltiorrhiza Mitochondrial Genome Provides the First Evidence of the Multi-Chromosomal Mitochondrial DNA Structure of Salvia Species

Heyu Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the mitogenome of Salvia miltiorrhiza was assembled using PacBio and Illumina sequencing technologies, revealing two major conformations and nine repeats that can mediate recombination. A total of 55 genes were predicted, and phylogenetic analysis showed congruence with the APG IV system. Nucleotide substitution rates analysis indicated positive selection in certain genes. These findings provide a foundation for future studies on the evolution of the Salvia mitogenome and molecular breeding of S. miltiorrhiza.

The effects of codon bias and optimality on mRNA and protein regulation

Fabian Hia et al.

Summary: The central dogma of molecular biology states that genetic information is transferred from nucleic acid to proteins. Recent research has highlighted the importance of mRNA regulation in controlling protein abundances, with a specific focus on codon bias and optimality. This system allows different organisms or cell types to coordinate physiological pathways in response to various stress or growth conditions.
