Metagenomic insights into the changes in the rhizosphere microbial community caused by the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita in tobacco

Peng Lu et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationships between RKNs, bacteria, and soil environmental factors by analyzing rhizobacterial communities in tobacco samples with different grades of RKN disease. The results showed that the structure and function of the plant rhizosphere were significantly correlated to RKN disease. RKN density and urease content were identified as key factors affecting the rhizosphere bacterial community, and cell wall degrading enzymes in the bacterial members positively correlated with RKN density were found to promote RKN colonization in tobacco roots.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria Burkholderia vietnamiensis B418 inhibits root-knot nematode on watermelon by modifying the rhizosphere microbial community

Minmin Liu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that B. vietnamiensis B418 is an effective biological nematicide for nematode management, which acts through the modulation of rhizosphere microbial community. Individual application of B418 showed the highest control efficacy against nematodes, while its combination with fosthiazate or avermectin exhibited slightly lower inhibitory effects. B418 inoculation resulted in a slight reduction in the bacterial community and a significant increment in the fungal community in the rhizosphere.

Tobacco Root Microbial Community Composition Significantly Associated With Root-Knot Nematode Infections: Dynamic Changes in Microbiota and Growth Stage

Yi Cao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial composition and diversity of tobacco roots at different growth stages in areas infected with the root-knot nematode (RKN). The results showed that RKN infection altered the microbial diversity and composition, with a shift from bacteria to fungi. The abundance of Sphingomonas decreased significantly, while Rhizobiaceae and Chryseobacterium increased in abundance. Comparing root microbes in different years, RKN infection was found to promote the proliferation of Pseudomonas and Setophoma. Additionally, 32 growth-promoting bacteria strains were identified from RKN-infected tobacco roots.

Biological control: a novel strategy for the control of the plant parasitic nematodes

Gufran Ahmad et al.

Summary: Plant parasitic nematodes cause significant economic losses in agriculture, and biological control using microorganisms like fungi and bacteria is the most effective way to reduce their impact. Nematophagous microorganisms can trap and feed on plant parasitic nematodes, creating potential for successful biological control agents. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind microbial nematode interactions is crucial for developing effective biocontrol strategies in the future.

Nematicidal Volatiles from Bacillus atrophaeus GBSC56 Promote Growth and Stimulate Induced Systemic Resistance in Tomato against Meloidogyne incognita

Muhammad Ayaz et al.

Summary: The Bacillus strain GBSC56 from Tibet region of China exhibited high nematicidal activity against plant nematodes, with three volatile compounds, DMDS, MIV, and 2-UD, showing strong efficacy. These volatiles induced oxidative stress in nematodes, leading to rapid death, while also enhancing the activity of antioxidant enzymes and promoting key genes related to plant growth. Additionally, defense-related genes in infested tomato plants were upregulated after treatment with certain volatiles, suggesting GBSC56's biocontrol potential against plant nematodes.

Multifunctional efficacy of the nodule endophyte Pseudomonas fragi in stimulating tomato immune response against Meloidogyne incognita

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the nodule endophytic bacterium Pseudomonas fragi Sneb1990 can effectively control Meloidogyne incognita infection in tomato plants. It promotes plant growth, activates plant immunity, and suppresses nematode development by enhancing the expression of specific genes. Additionally, flagellin polypeptide flg22 from P. fragi Sneb1990 triggers tomato immunity against M. incognita, suggesting its potential as a biocontrol agent.
