Overexpression of a rice Tubby-like protein-encoding gene, OsFBT4, confers tolerance to abiotic stresses

Nitin Jain et al.

Summary: The study investigated the role of OsFBT4 in abiotic stress signaling and found that its transcript was upregulated in response to various abiotic stressors in rice, including exogenous ABA. Ectopic expression of OsFBT4 in Arabidopsis caused hypersensitivity to most abiotic stresses during germination and early seedling growth, but conferred tolerance to all abiotic stresses at the 5-day-old seedling growth stage. The study suggests that OsFBT4 plays wide and intricate roles in stress signaling and may also be involved in plant development.

Photosynthetic efficiency of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) seedlings in response to Ni and Cd stress

Piotr Dabrowski et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to analyze the photosynthetic efficiency of perennial ryegrass seedlings under stress from cadmium and nickel. The activity of photosystem II and photosystem I decreased, likely due to increased nonradiative dissipation, decreased antenna size, or decreased number of photosynthetic complexes. Electron transport efficiency was also reduced. The modulated reflectance signal suggested a restriction in electron flow. The correlation between photosynthetic efficiency parameters and growth parameters indicated that some parameters could be used to detect heavy metal effects early on.

Photoprotection conferring plant tolerance to freezing stress through rescuing photosystem in evergreen Rhododendron

Bing Liu et al.

Summary: This study reveals that photoprotection plays a crucial role in enhancing freezing tolerance in evergreen rhododendrons. The expression and circadian rhythm of RhELIP3 and RhHY5 are regulated by photoperiod and low temperature, and they have been found to improve freezing tolerance and protect the photosystem II function in Arabidopsis.

Convergent evolution of AP2/ERF III and IX subfamilies through recurrent polyploidization and tandem duplication during eudicot adaptation to paleoenvironmental changes

Liangyu Guo et al.

Summary: Most eudicot plants did not undergo recent whole-genome duplication (R-WGD), but they were still able to adapt to environmental changes. In this study, researchers found that the AP2/ERF transcription factor family was retained after R-WGDs in some eudicot plants and showed exceptional response to cold stimulation. By comparing plants with and without R-WGD, the study revealed convergent expansions of the AP2/ERF III and IX subfamilies through independent duplications and tandem duplications (TDs) after R-WGDs. These expansions coincided with times of global cooling, particularly around and/or after the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) boundary. The co-retention and expansion of AP2/ERF III C-repeat binding factor (CBF) duplicates contributed to rewiring of cold-specific regulatory networks in different eudicot lineages.

Transcriptome Analysis of the Responses of Rice Leaves to Chilling and Subsequent Recovery

Zhong Li et al.

Summary: Improving chilling tolerance at the seedling stage in rice is crucial for agricultural research. This study combined physiological analysis and transcriptomics to investigate the chilling tolerance mechanisms of rice. The results revealed the inhibitory effects of chilling on chlorophyll and non-structural carbohydrate synthesis, disruption of ion balance, and impaired function of rice leaves. Recovery treatment effectively reversed the chilling-related injury. Transcriptome analysis identified differentially expressed genes involved in various functional categories, such as ribosome, photosynthesis-antenna proteins, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and linoleic acid metabolism. Subcellular localization showed that most proteins were located in chloroplasts, cytosol, and nucleus. The findings suggest that genes related to photosynthesis, ribosome, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and linoleic acid metabolism may play key roles in enhancing rice adaptation to chilling stress and recovery capacity.

Innovations and stepwise evolution of CBFs/DREB1s and their regulatory networks in angiosperms

Yuqi Nie et al.

Summary: The study reveals the origin and evolution of C-repeat binding factors/dehydration-responsive element binding protein 1s (CBFs/DREB1s) and their regulatory network. It shows that CBF/DREB1 is an innovation evolved from tandem duplication-derived DREB III gene and has expanded in ancient and modern plants through gene duplication. The duplication events mainly occurred during periods of significant global temperature decrease and the duplicated CBF/DREB1 genes contributed to the rewiring of the regulatory network for cold tolerance in plants.

Summary: By using an integrated multi-omics approach, this study investigated the global metabolites and regulatory pathways in an Antarctic moss under cold stress. The results revealed changes in proline content, antioxidant enzyme activities, chlorophyll, and flavonoids. Metabolome and transcriptome analyses suggested that jasmonate signaling, auxin signaling, fatty acids biosynthesis, and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways contribute to the adaptation of the moss to cold stress.
