Physiological and molecular mechanisms of medicinal plants in response to cadmium stress: Current status and future perspective

Panhui Fan et al.

Summary: Medicinal plants have various uses worldwide, but their quality is affected by cadmium pollution. Medicinal plants have complex mechanisms to cope with cadmium stress, including antioxidant systems and chelating peptides. While progress has been made in exploring the physiological mechanisms, research into molecular mechanisms is still lacking. This review provides a reference for studying the responses of medicinal plants to cadmium stress.

Effects of foliar application of abscisic acid on antioxidant content, phytohormones in strawberry shoots, and translocation of various heavy metals

Ayhan Kocaman

Summary: The exogenous use of abscisic acid (ABA), as a plant hormone, limited the translocation of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Hg, and Sn) into strawberry leaves, resulting in a reduction of negative effects on chlorophyll content and yield. On the other hand, phytohormones (JA, SA, zeatin, CK, GA) played a role in attenuating membrane lipid peroxidation responsible for cellular damage caused by heavy metal stress. This study suggests that exogenous ABA can be considered as a good indicator for safer food production on contaminated farmland.

Cadmium Transport in Maize Root Segments Using a Classical Physiological Approach: Evidence of Influx Largely Exceeding Efflux in Subapical Regions

Alberto Rivetta et al.

Summary: The bidirectional fluxes of cadmium and calcium across the plasma membrane were compared in subapical maize root segments. Cadmium influx was characterized by a combination of a saturable rectangular hyperbola and a straight line, indicating multiple transport systems. Calcium influx was described by a simple Michaelis-Menten function. The addition of calcium reduced cadmium influx, suggesting competition between the two ions.

Unraveling Cadmium Toxicity in Trifolium repens L. Seedling: Insight into Regulatory Mechanisms Using Comparative Transcriptomics Combined with Physiological Analyses

Feifei Wu et al.

Summary: Trifolium repens is a potential plant for phytoremediation due to its ability to accumulate heavy metal ions. This study investigated the response of T. repens to high levels of CdCl2 exposure. The results showed that T. repens seedlings exhibited high tolerance to Cd treatment, with higher Cd concentration in the roots distributed in the cell wall. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that genes related to glutathione metabolism and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis were highly expressed in the roots, while those involved in photosynthesis, transferase activity, oxidoreductase activity, and ABA signal transduction were enriched in the leaves. This suggests that T. repens employs multiple mechanisms, such as cell wall biosynthesis and GSH metabolism, to protect itself against Cd stress.

Jasmonic acid alleviates cadmium toxicity through regulating the antioxidant response and enhancing the chelation of cadmium in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Yan Li et al.

Summary: Jasmonic acid (JA) can reduce the content of cadmium (Cd) in rice roots and shoots by promoting the combination of Cd on soluble pectin and inhibiting Cd movement into protoplasts. Additionally, JA application can help alleviate lipid peroxidation damage induced by Cd by reducing H2O2 content. Field experiments also showed that foliar spraying of JA can inhibit the transport of Cd from the stalk and root to the grain in rice.

Foliar application of gibberellin inhibits the cadmium uptake and xylem transport in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.)

Hao Chen et al.

Summary: Gibberellin (GA) has been shown to have beneficial effects on plant resistance to abiotic stresses, including mitigating Cd stress in lettuce plants. GA treatment increased root length and surface area, reduced Cd uptake, and decreased Cd root-to-shoot translocation, ultimately alleviating Cd toxicity in lettuce leaves.

Soil amendments inhibited the cadmium accumulation in Ligusticum striatum DC. and improved the plant growth

Xian Xiao et al.

Summary: Soil aggregates have a significant impact on the bioavailability of heavy metals, particularly cadmium. Adding amendments to soil can promote the formation of larger soil aggregates and redistribute cadmium from larger to smaller aggregates, which can reduce its accumulation in plants. The amendments not only alleviate the phytotoxic effects of cadmium on plants but also promote plant growth by improving nutrient availability.
