Seed coat treatment by plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria Lysobacter antibioticus 13-6 enhances maize yield and changes rhizosphere bacterial communities

Zhenlin Dai et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of Lysobacter antibioticus 13-6 seed coat treatment on soil physicochemical properties, plant growth, and bacterial community composition of maize plants was investigated. It was found that Lysobacter antibioticus 13-6 significantly improved soil properties and enhanced the growth of maize plants, while also changing the diversity and composition of rhizosphere bacterial communities. Genome analysis revealed that Lysobacter antibioticus 13-6 carries genes related to indole acetic acid synthesis, chitinase decomposition, and P solubilization, making it a highly potent plant growth-promoting bacteria.

Modifying Sowing date as an Adaptation Strategy to Climate Change in Grain Maize (Zea mays L.) Under mild-arid Climates as Simulated by the SSM-Maize Model

Amir Kafaie Ghaeini et al.

Summary: Climate change is considered the biggest threat to sustainable development, especially in the agricultural sector. This study investigated the impact of sowing date and CO2 concentration on maize yield under different climate change scenarios. The results showed that changing the sowing date and CO2 concentration can help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change on maize production.

Agronomic strategies to enhance the early vigor and yield of maize. Part I: the role of seed applied biostimulant, hybrid and starter fertilization on rhizosphere bacteria profile and diversity

Gergely Ujvari et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of cropping system on the rhizosphere bacterial communities of two maize genotypes. The results show that the biostimulant treatment has a greater impact on the rhizosphere bacterial microbiota of the ordinary hybrid, while NP fertilization significantly affects the diversity of bacterial community in both maize genotypes. Furthermore, the maize genotype is found to be the major factor shaping the composition of rhizosphere bacterial community.

Bacillus amyloliquefaciens as an excellent agent for biofertilizer and biocontrol in agriculture: An overview for its mechanisms

Lin Luo et al.

Summary: This review discusses the plant growth promotion (PGP) mechanisms of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) and its current limitations in agriculture. BA can improve soil nutrient availability, change soil microbial community, secrete hormones and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and enhance plant resistance against biotic and abiotic stresses. Future studies should focus on the nutrient uptake mechanisms of plants in different soil conditions.

Global maize production, consumption and trade: trends and R&D implications

Olaf Erenstein et al.

Summary: Maize has played a significant role in global agri-food systems and its production has been rapidly increasing, making it the leading cereal in terms of volume. Its versatile uses as food, feed, and non-food products make it a globally important crop. The ongoing transformation of agri-food systems in the Global South requires attention to inclusiveness and sustainability, with further investments needed in research and development to enhance the role of maize in food and livelihood security while staying within planetary boundaries.

The synergistic effect of nitrogen and phosphorus starter fertilization sub-surface banded at sowing on the early vigor, grain yield and quality of maize

Massimo Blandino et al.

Summary: Early sowing improves maize grain yields and profitability, but cool conditions can limit the uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus by the roots. Applying starter fertilizers near the roots, especially a combination of nitrogen and phosphorus, enhances early growth and grain yield of maize, as well as improving grain quality and sanitary traits.

Efficiency and mechanism of reducing ammonia volatilization in alkaline farmland soil using Bacillus amyloliquefaciens biofertilizer

Lixia Xue et al.

Summary: The study showed that the application of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens (BA) biofertilizer can effectively reduce ammonia volatilization, increase crop yield and nitrogen utilization by inhibiting urease activity and promoting potential ammonia oxidation. This suggests that BA biofertilizer is a feasible strategy to improve crop yields and reduce agricultural ammonia emissions.

Maize germplasm chronosequence shows crop breeding history impacts recruitment of the rhizosphere microbiome

Alonso Favela et al.

Summary: The recruitment of rhizosphere microbiome in maize is significantly influenced by the genetic relatedness of host plant and decade of germplasm development. More recently developed germplasm tends to recruit fewer microbial taxa with the capability for sustainable nitrogen provisioning, indicating inadvertent modifications in interactions between maize and its microbiome by agronomic management approaches of industrial agriculture.
