High-throughput discovery of plastid genes causing albino phenotypes in ornamental chimeric plants

Hyun-Seung Park et al.

Summary: By studying the complete plastid genomes in chimeric plants, we identified 14 different point mutations in eight functional plastid genes related to plastid-encoded RNA polymerase or photosystems, which caused albinism in the chimeric plants. We found that in some plants, the plastomes were identical between green and albino tissues, while in others there were mutations between the two tissues.

Phylogenetics of Serjania (Sapindaceae-Paullinieae), with emphasis on fruit evolution and the description of a new species from Michoacan, Mexico

Victor W. Steinmann et al.

Summary: Serjania is one of the largest Neotropical genera of Sapindaceae, and this study uses nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F sequences to investigate its phylogeny. The study finds that the fruit type within the genus is not consistent, with independent derivations to capsular fruits and transitions back to schizocarps. The infrageneric classification is problematic and needs further research to understand relationships and establish a new classification. Additionally, a new capsular-fruited species is described and compared with its closest relatives, with synonymies and lectotypifications established.

Chloroplast Genome of Rambutan and Comparative Analyses in Sapindaceae

Fei Dong et al.

Summary: Rambutan, an important fruit tree cultivated widely in Southeast Asia, has a chloroplast genome with a typical quadripartite structure, containing 132 genes and repetitive sequences. Study of the rambutan chloroplast genome revealed biased codon usage, potential RNA editing sites, and positively selected genes. Comparative analyses showed divergence in the chloroplast genome of rambutan compared to other Sapindaceae species and its closest phylogenetic relationship with Pometia tomentosa.

Climbing since the early Miocene: The fossil record of Paullinieae (Sapindaceae)

Nathan A. Jud et al.

Summary: This study describes anatomically preserved fossils of Paullinieae for the first time and re-evaluates other macrofossils attributed to the tribe through comparisons with extant plants. The fossils provide direct evidence of the origin of Paullinieae and suggest the diversification of this group in the tropics around 18.5-19 million years ago.

Plastome analysis unveils Inverted Repeat (IR) expansion and positive selection in Sea Lavenders (Limonium, Plumbaginaceae, Limonioideae, Limonieae)

Ashwini M. Darshetkar et al.

Summary: In this study, two new plastomes for the genus Limonium were sequenced and compared, revealing gene content and structural variations. Positively selected genes were identified and potential DNA barcodes proposed for the genus based on nucleotide diversity. The plastome research on Limonium is significant for understanding genetic evolution and interspecies relationships within the genus.

Chloroplast and mitochondrial DNA editing in plants

Beum-Chang Kang et al.

Summary: A new Golden Gate cloning system was developed for gene editing in plant organelles, enabling efficient point mutation editing in mitochondria and chloroplasts. This system achieved high frequencies of base editing in plant calli and plantlets, providing a promising approach for genetic manipulation in plants.
