Salicylic acid biosynthesis is not from phenylalanine in Arabidopsis

Jie Wu et al.

Summary: Salicylic acid (SA) is a phytohormone that regulates plant responses to biotic and abiotic stress. Two biosynthetic pathways for SA have been documented in plants: the isochorismate (IC) pathway and the phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) pathway. However, there is no solid evidence that the PAL pathway contributes to SA biosynthesis. This study found that feeding Arabidopsis thaliana with C-13-labeled phenylalanine resulted in incorporation of the label into its isomer 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) instead of SA, indicating that SA biosynthesis is not from phenylalanine in Arabidopsis. These findings have implications for our understanding of the SA biosynthetic pathway in land plants.

Identification of a diarylpentanoid-producing polyketide synthase revealing an unusual biosynthetic pathway of 2-(2-phenylethyl)chromones in agarwood

Xiao-Hui Wang et al.

Summary: 2-(2-Phenylethyl)chromones (PECs) are the principal constituents contributing to the distinctive fragrance of agarwood. In this study, the authors identify PECPS, a key enzyme involved in PECs biosynthesis, and provide insight into its catalytic mechanism.

Integrated transcriptomic and metabolic analyses reveal that ethylene enhances peach susceptibility to Lasiodiplodia theobromae-induced gummosis

Dongmei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the infection of Lasiodiplodia theobromae in peach trees leads to the accumulation of ethylene (ET) and jasmonic acid (JA), resulting in the production of gum. ET activates UDP-sugar metabolic genes and modulates JA and SA biosynthesis through the transcription factor EIL1, aggravating the development of gummosis.

Molecular dissection of rice phytohormone signaling involved in resistance to a piercing-sucking herbivore

Jie Xu et al.

Summary: The phytohormone JA plays a crucial role in rice defense against the brown planthopper, while SA does not have a significant impact. Infestation by brown planthopper activates the JA signaling pathway and leads to accumulation of defensive secondary metabolites. JA-deficient lines are more susceptible to brown planthoppers, and MYC2 mutants are more vulnerable to brown planthopper infestation in nature.

Plant volatiles as regulators of plant defense and herbivore immunity: molecular mechanisms and unanswered questions

Lingfei Hu et al.

Summary: HIPVs not only influence the behavior of herbivores and natural enemies, but also induce plant defenses and regulate herbivore immunity. Although the mechanisms are still unclear, the regulatory effects of HIPVs may depend on specific contexts.

Salicylic Acid Biosynthesis and Metabolism: A Divergent Pathway for Plants and Bacteria

Awdhesh Kumar Mishra et al.

Summary: Salicylic acid is an active secondary metabolite found in bacteria, fungi, and plants, playing important roles in regulating plant growth, stress responses, and defense mechanisms. Both plants and bacteria share a common biosynthetic enzyme, isochorismate synthase, which is involved in synthesizing SA. These compounds can undergo modifications in plants and bacteria to carry out their specific functions.

Interactions of importers in long-distance transmission of wound-induced jasmonate

Mengya Li et al.

Summary: Mobile wound signals can trigger the production of jasmonic acid (JA) and activate related signaling pathways to enhance plant resistance against future challenges. AtJAT3 and AtJAT4 are key proteins in the transport of JA in plants, forming dimers to function effectively.
