A food poisoning caused by ST7 Staphylococcal aureus harboring sea gene in Hainan province, China

Yahui Guo et al.

Summary: ST7 Staphylococcus aureus, which is highly prevalent in humans, pigs, and food in China, has rarely been reported to cause staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). However, a recent outbreak of SFP caused by ST7 S. aureus strains occurred in two kindergartens in Hainan Province, China. Whole-genome sequencing analysis revealed the genetic characteristics and phylogenetic relationships of these SFP strains and provided insights into the potential risk of this emergent ST7 clone for SFP.

Bacterial diarrhoea

Karen L. Kotloff

Summary: This review discusses the recent burden of bacterial diarrhea, including surveillance, newer diagnostics, emerging multidrug resistance, and ongoing vaccine developments. In many settings, the introduction of rotavirus vaccines has significantly reduced the incidence of rotavirus-specific and all-cause gastroenteritis, with norovirus now becoming a major pathogen. Bacterial pathogens, such as Shigella, non-typhoidal Salmonella, Campylobacter, and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, continue to be a significant cause of diarrheal illness, particularly in lower income countries.

Methicillin- and Vancomycin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus From Humans and Ready-To-Eat Meat: Characterization of Antimicrobial Resistance and Biofilm Formation Ability

Taisir Saber et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the frequency, antimicrobial resistance, and biofilm-forming ability of MRSA and VRSA in RTE meat and food handlers. The presence of these bacteria in these sources highlights the potential danger and calls for stricter hygiene practices and antimicrobial surveillance plans to reduce the risk of spread.

Prevalence, antibiotic resistance, and enterotoxin genes of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from milk and dairy products worldwide: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reviewed research on Staphylococcus aureus in milk and dairy products worldwide. The results showed that the prevalence of S. aureus in raw milk was higher than in dairy products and pasteurized milk. The resistance rates of penicillin and ampicillin were found to be high, and the antibiotic resistance of ampicillin, gentamicin, and chloramphenicol increased over time. The study also found a high prevalence of staphylococcal enterotoxins, with the highest rates associated with SEC and SEA genes. Improving the health of milking animals, elevating milking hygiene, and using pasteurization can ensure the hygiene and safety of raw milk.

Molecular Characterization of Methicillin-Sensitive Staphylococcus aureus from the Intestinal Tracts of Adult Patients in China

Yang Li et al.

Summary: Intestinal infections caused by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) have become a growing concern among adult patients in China. The study revealed a high resistance rate of MSSA to penicillin and erythromycin, and a higher proportion of multidrug-resistant strains in MSSA compared to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The most predominant MLST types were ST398 and ST15. Resistance genes blaZ and erm(C) were frequently detected, while the Panton-Valentine leucocidin (pvl) gene was less common.

Characterization of antimicrobial-resistant Staphylococcus aureus from retail foods in Beijing, China

Heng Li et al.

Summary: The study found the presence of antimicrobial-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in sushi and pork products in Beijing, China, with some isolates originating from human sources. The transmission potential of antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus through foods was highlighted, emphasizing the importance of public health concerns. Geographical variation in ST profiles, antimicrobial resistance, and virulence genes of S. aureus between isolates from Beijing and Copenhagen, Denmark, was also demonstrated.

Staphylococcus aureus bloodstream infections: diverging trends of meticillin-resistant and meticillin-susceptible isolates, EU/EEA, 2005 to 2018

Carlo Gagliotti et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the European Union and European Economic Area from 2005 to 2018 revealed a decrease in MRSA percentage among S. aureus BSI, while MSSA BSI and total BSI numbers increased. These trends were statistically significant and emphasized the importance of monitoring both infection incidence and resistance percentages. Further research is needed to explore factors associated with these trends and their attributable risks.

The Staphylococcus aureus CC398 Lineage: An Evolution Driven by the Acquisition of Prophages and Other Mobile Genetic Elements

Floriane Laumay et al.

Summary: The CC398 lineage of Staphylococcus aureus, initially described as livestock colonizers, has now been found to cause severe infections in humans, even in patients without contact with animals. Recent studies suggest that CC398 strains are evolving towards increased virulence and antibiotic resistance.
