Immunomodulatory Potency of Eclipta alba (Bhringaraj) Leaf Extract in Heteropneustes fossilis against Oomycete Pathogen, Aphanomyces invadans

Summary: The study found that an extract from Eclipta alba leaves, at concentrations between 50-100 ppm, can protect Heteropneustes fossilis fingerlings against Aphanomyces invadans infection. The extract induces anti-stress and antioxidative response in fish, enhancing their survival and immunity against the pathogen. This study suggests that the extract could be used as part of a holistic strategy to control epizootic ulcerative syndrome (EUS) in fish species.

Whole spectrum of Aeromonas hydrophila virulence determinants and the identification of novel SNPs using comparative pathogenomics

Summary: Aeromonas hydrophila is a common fish pathogen and opportunistic human pathogen. It causes diseases in fish and humans, and different factors influence its virulence. In this study, the genomes of 95 Aeromonas spp. strains were examined, and 53 strains were identified as A. hydrophila. The pan-genome analysis revealed 312 virulence genes, with effector delivery system category having the most number. Additionally, distinctive single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified in four genes that can serve as molecular marker candidates for precise identification of A. hydrophila.

Aeromonas veronii Is a Lethal Pathogen Isolated from Gut of Infected Labeo rohita: Molecular Insight to Understand the Bacterial Virulence and Its Induced Host Immunity

Summary: This study investigated a case of severe mortality in farmed Labeo rohita and identified the causative agent as Aeromonas veronii. The isolated strain showed resistance to ampicillin and dicloxacillin, but susceptibility to 22 other antibiotics. It was also found that A. veronii induced stress and immune responses in L. rohita. The negative effects of the pathogen on fish health and high mortality rate highlight the need for A. veronii management.

Investigating bio-remediation capabilities of a constructed wetland through spatial successional study of the sediment microbiome

Summary: Constructed wetlands (CWs) are engineered environments for treating wastewater. This study isolated bacterial strains from sediment in a CW and found that isolates closer to the wastewater source were more likely to be pathogenic, while those further away were non-pathogenic and had inhibitory effects against pathogenic strains. Non-pathogenic isolates also showed the ability to reduce ammonia levels. The study highlights the potential of using these isolates for further bioremediation efforts.

Antibiotic Resistance, Virulence Gene Detection, and Biofilm Formation in Aeromonas spp. Isolated from Fish and Humans in Egypt

Summary: Despite advancements in food safety, there is still a risk of contamination in the food supply chain. This study examined the prevalence, antibiotic resistance, virulence, and biofilm formation of Aeromonas spp. in raw fish markets and humans in Egypt. The results found a high susceptibility to imipenem and chloramphenicol, as well as a high multiple antibiotic resistance index. Biofilm formation was also observed in some isolates. Control measures should be implemented to prevent contamination in specific areas and protect individuals from multidrug-resistant strains.

A review on pathogenicity of Aeromonas hydrophila and their mitigation through medicinal herbs in aquaculture

Summary: Aeromonas hydrophila is a freshwater bacterium that causes gastroenteritis and septicemia in fishes and leads to the disease known as Motile Aeromonas Septicemia (MAS). Virulence factors such as haemolysin, aerolysin, cytosine, gelatinase, enterotoxin, and antimicrobial peptides have been identified in A. hydrophila. Phytotherapy using medicinal herbs/plants with their bioactive compounds is an alternative and eco-friendly approach to reduce the pathogenicity of aquatic environmental pathogens. This review emphasizes the diverse applications of phytotherapy in aquaculture disease management, contributing to the development of organic aquaculture.

Whole genome sequence analysis of Aeromonas spp. isolated from ready-to-eat seafood: antimicrobial resistance and virulence factors
