Quorum sensing interference by phenolic compounds - A matter of bacterial misunderstanding

Emilia Maria Franca Lima et al.

Summary: In the past decade, there has been a significant amount of literature discussing the inhibition of quorum sensing (QS) by plant extracts and phenolic compounds. However, there is a lack of studies on the specific mechanisms behind these inhibitory effects. This study focuses on the most studied QS system, autoinducer type 1 (AI-1), and aims to understand the cellular level actions of phenolic compounds and the potential mechanisms of QS inhibition. The use of QS inhibitors in biotechnological applications holds promising prospects for the pharmaceutical and food industries as adjunct therapies and in preventing biofilms on various surfaces.

Putrescine and Its Metabolic Precursor Arginine Promote Biofilm and c-di-GMP Synthesis in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Zhexian Liu et al.

Summary: Pseudomonas aeruginosa can regulate biofilm formation by synthesizing and catabolizing polyamines. Both putrescine and its biosynthetic precursor, arginine, promote biofilm formation by increasing the level of c-di-GMP in the cells.

Antibiofilm Activity of Sundew Species against Multidrug-Resistant Escherichia coli Strains

Sandy Gerschler et al.

Summary: Extracts from European Drosera species, such as Drosera rotundifolia and Drosera intermedia, have shown more effective biofilm inhibition activity against multidrug-resistant Escherichia coli strains compared to commercial sundew products and isolated compounds. Sundew extracts may serve as a potential therapeutic approach for targeting biofilm production. Among the compounds isolated from European sundew species, 2''-O-galloyl hyperoside stood out for its biofilm inhibitory activity.

A Combined Bayesian and Similarity-Based Approach for Predicting E. coli Biofilm Inhibition by Phenolic Natural Compounds

Dmitri Stepanov et al.

Summary: Screening for biofilm inhibition by purified natural compounds is challenging due to their chemical diversity and limited availability. In this study, researchers performed experimental assessment of antibiofilm activity of 320 phenolic natural compounds and trained a predictive model for biofilm inhibition. The model achieved a high accuracy in predicting the targeted effect and significantly improved the discovery rate of active phenolic compounds when compared to random selection.

Geno- and Phenotypic Characteristics of a Klebsiella pneumoniae ST20 Isolate with Unusual Colony Morphology

Katharina Sydow et al.

Summary: The study found that the Klebsiella pneumoniae isolate PBIO3459 belongs to sequence type (ST)20, has low-level virulence, and does not carry acquired resistance genes, showing susceptibility to antibiotics. Compared to closely related ABR-Kp ST20 isolates, they mainly differ in resistance genes.
