Effects of lead pollution on soil microbial community diversity and biomass and on invertase activity

Xin Sun et al.

Summary: Lead pollution is a widespread and harmful environmental problem globally. This study investigated soil contaminated by lead from different sources and analyzed the functional diversity and metabolism of soil microbial communities using Biolog technology. The results show that lead pollution significantly influences the diversity and metabolic functions of soil microbial communities, leading to a decrease in microbial activity.

Health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in park soils of the largest megacity in China by using Monte Carlo simulation coupled with Positive matrix factorization model

Jingling Huang et al.

Summary: The study found that mercury, cadmium, and lead were the main heavy metals in Shanghai urban parks, posing higher ecological risks, with health risks mainly coming from industrial production and traffic emissions. Although non-carcinogenic risks can be neglected, the total carcinogenic risk cannot be ignored, with children being more susceptible.

Impact of DNA extraction and sampling methods on bacterial communities monitored by 16S rDNA metabarcoding in cold-smoked salmon and processing plant surfaces

Aurelien Maillet et al.

Summary: Amplicon sequencing was used to analyze bacterial communities associated with cold-smoked salmon products and processing plant surfaces. The study found that DNA extraction methods influenced the observed microbiota composition in cold-smoked salmon, while cleaning and disinfection procedures affected surface microbiota richness and diversity. Genus-level analysis identified dominant bacteria and beta-diversity analyses indicated that surface topology and sampling methods affected bacterial community composition. Standardization of methodology and analytical validation are important for accurate 16S rDNA metabarcoding surveys.

Impacts on aquatic biota from salinization and metalloid contamination by gold mine tailings in sub-Arctic lakes

Madi Perrett et al.

Summary: This study examined the long-term impacts of past regional gold mining activities on sub-Arctic lakes near Con Mine, finding that the lakes were influenced by metal(loid) pollution and salt-rich mine drainage. The presence of halophilic diatom species in recent sediments suggests that extreme saline conditions continue to affect the biota over a decade after mining activities ceased. The lack of biological recovery indicates the ongoing challenges faced by mine-impacted lakes in terms of elevated contaminant levels and emerging stressors like climate warming and land-use changes.

Identification of Cd-resistant microorganisms from heavy metal-contaminated soil and its potential in promoting the growth and Cd accumulation of bermudagrass

Yan Xie et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation with the help of microorganisms can significantly improve plant growth and metal solubilization in heavy metal contaminated soils. The presence of Cd-resistant fungal strain could enhance plant growth, Cd accumulation, and tolerance in bermudagrass under Cd stress. Certain microbial taxa in polluted soil contribute to metal accumulation and plant growth improvement in phytoremediation processes.

Differences in Soil Physicochemical Properties in Different-Aged Pinus massoniana Plantations in Southwest China

Xiaoai Yin et al.

Summary: With increasing age of Masson pine forest plantations, soil physicochemical properties change, such as significantly higher soil pH in 20-year-old forests and higher soil-available phosphorus in 60-year-old forests. The availability and efficiency of soil nutrients vary with forest age, with the intermediate age being a critical time point affecting soil properties.
