Nitrogen removal characterization and functional enzymes identification of a hypothermia bacterium Pseudomonas fragi EH-H1

Qifeng Wu et al.

Summary: A novel hypothermic strain, Pseudomonas fragi EH-H1, was found to effectively perform heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification at 15 degrees C. This strain showed high removal efficiency for ammonium, nitrate, and nitrite, with peak removal rates of 5.51, 3.63, and 3.14 mg/L/h, respectively. The strain preferentially removed ammonium during simultaneous nitrification and denitrification and maintained a stable nitrite removal rate regardless of ammonium supplementation. Key enzymes involved in nitrification and denitrification, including ammonia monooxygenase and nitrite oxidoreductase, were detected in strain EH-H1. Overall, this strain exhibited outstanding nitrogen removal capabilities at low temperatures and could be applied in cryogenic wastewater treatment.

Dealing with water stress and microbial preservation

Maximino Manzanera

Summary: The importance of preserving microorganisms has been recognized for decades, with current focus on improving preservation methods to enhance microbial survival rates, to save new taxa, and preserve fragile microbial communities. The effects of drought on microbial diversity shift and molecular responses of microorganisms, as well as their interactions with other organisms are discussed. Additionally, the study emphasizes applying knowledge from desiccation-tolerant microorganisms to enhance preservation techniques.
