Genome-based risk assessment for foodborne Salmonella enterica from food animals in China: A One Health perspective

Biao Tang et al.

Summary: Salmonella is a common cause of foodborne bacterial disease, with animal-borne foods being the primary source of transmission. However, there is limited knowledge about antimicrobial resistance and virulence of Salmonella based on a One Health approach in China. To address this, the genomic data of 134 Salmonella isolates from animal and meat samples in China were analyzed. The results showed that a majority of the isolates were multidrug-resistant and contained various virulence genes. This study highlights the use of whole-genome sequencing as a cost-effective method for comprehensive surveillance of foodborne Salmonella isolates in the One Health approach.

Dengue virus infection-a review of pathogenesis, vaccines, diagnosis and therapy

Boon Hui Kok et al.

Summary: The transmission of dengue virus (DENV) from an infected mosquito to a human can cause a range of illnesses, from mild dengue fever to fatal dengue shock syndrome. The similarity in structure and sequence among different DENV serotypes and flaviviruses can lead to cross-reactions and antibody-dependent enhancement. Developing a vaccine that can effectively protect against infection by different DENV serotypes is a major challenge. Accurate and specific diagnostic tools are also needed to avoid false diagnosis and delay in proper intervention.

Dengue fever and dengue virus in People's Republic of China

Tiantian Wu et al.

Summary: Infection with dengue virus (DENV) can lead to a range of symptoms from dengue fever to severe dengue, causing a significant burden on global populations, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The four serotypes of DENV have been identified in China, leading to frequent outbreaks in southern and coastal provinces. Despite the lack of antiviral drugs and approved vaccines, strategies such as public awareness and mosquito control have helped reduce the prevalence of dengue in China.

The distinguishing NS5-M114V mutation in American Zika virus isolates has negligible impacts on virus replication and transmission potential

Nias Y. G. Peng et al.

Summary: The NS5-M114V mutation has little impact on the replication and transmission potential of the Zika virus in cells and in vivo, but slightly prolongs viremia in mice and reduces mosquito infection and dissemination rates.

Summary: This study analyzed viral samples from a dengue outbreak and identified both local and imported strains of DENV-1 genotype 1. A comparison of mutations showed differences between the local and imported strains, as well as changes in the secondary structure of the local strains' 3' UTR. The study also detected selection pressure and recombination events, highlighting the need for further research.

Yan Li et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the genomic features of antimicrobial resistance and virulence potential in 105 non-Pullorum/Gallinarum Salmonella isolates recovered from dead poultry in Shandong, China. The isolates showed high antimicrobial resistance and harbored different critical virulence genes, highlighting the urgent need for effective strategies to mitigate avian salmonellosis.

A nontyphoidal Salmonella serovar domestication accompanying enhanced niche adaptation

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The study investigates the emergence of invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella in China and identifies the international animal feed trade as a likely vehicle for its introduction. The results highlight the importance of genomics in uncovering international transmission and the emergence of hypervirulent strains with increased antibiotic resistance.

Higher tolerance of predominant Salmonella serovars circulating in the antibiotic-free feed farms to environmental stresses

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The ban on antibiotic-supplemented feed can decrease the prevalence of multi-drug resistant Salmonella, but the persistent presence of these bacteria in the environment is still a concern. Our study found that Salmonella isolates from farms that stopped using antibiotics were still multi-drug resistant and belonged to predominant serovars. Environmental stress assays showed that these serovars were more tolerant to stress conditions. Future policies should focus on identifying and targeting these predominant Salmonella clones.

Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles and Genetic Typing of Salmonella Serovars from Chicken Embryos in China

Yaohui Xu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Salmonella strains isolated from chicken embryos in Henan province exhibited high resistance to ampicillin (66.67%) and sulfisoxazole (66.67%), with 67.5% of strains being multidrug resistant and 21.67% confirmed as ESBLs positive. Resistance was found to be serovar-dependent, with ESBLs positive strains showing more multi-resistance than ESBLs negative strains.
