Gross nitrogen transformations in intertidal sediments of the Yangtze Estuary: Distribution patterns and environmental controls

Shuntao Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatial changes in gross nitrogen transformation rates and related functional gene abundances in the intertidal zone of the Yangtze Estuary. The results suggest that gross nitrogen transformation rates vary significantly in estuarine and intertidal wetlands, with higher rates observed in freshwater and low-salinity areas. Sedimentary total organic carbon, nitrite, ferrous iron, and microbial functional gene abundances jointly mediate the gross nitrogen transformations. This research provides a better understanding of nitrogen cycling and management strategies in estuarine and coastal environments.

Impacts of extreme climate on nitrogen loss in different forms and pollution risk with the copula model

Jingyi Hu et al.

Summary: Climate change is a key factor affecting aquatic environments, and extreme climate events have increased the uncertainty of nitrogen pollution. This study assessed the risk of nitrogen loss under different climatic conditions using the upper and middle Wei River Basin as the study area. The results showed that organic nitrogen loss was mainly influenced by high precipitation, while nitrate loss was affected by precipitation amount and consecutive days with no precipitation. This study provides a method for quantifying the risk of nitrogen pollution under specific climate conditions and optimizing management measures.

Aromatic compounds releases aroused by sediment resuspension alter nitrate transformation rates and pathways during aerobic-anoxic transition

Xiaoyan Liu et al.

Summary: Aromatic compounds released by sediment resuspension can accelerate nitrate-N transformation, with methylbenzene having a more significant impact compared to aniline and nitrobenzene. Microbial analysis revealed changes in microbial cooccurrence networks and associations among bacteria due to sediment resuspension, with dominant bacteria abundance varying with different ACs releases. Analysis also showed that ACs distributed in suspended sediment indirectly affected nitrate-N transformation rates and pathways through altering bacteria abundance and electron transport system activity.

Nitrogen biogeochemical reactions during bank filtration constrained by hydrogeochemical and isotopic evidence: A case study in a riverbank filtration site along the Second Songhua River, NE China

Yaoxuan Chen et al.

Summary: River eutrophication and nitrogen pollution pose a potential threat to groundwater quality in riverbank filtration systems. This study used hydrogeochemical and stable isotope tracing techniques to investigate the geochemical reactions controlling nitrogen migration and transformation during riverbank filtration in a typical site in NE China. The results revealed that mixing, adsorption, organic nitrogen mineralization, denitrification, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) are the main geochemical reactions. Denitrification primarily occurs close to the riverbed surface and accounts for NO3- attenuation, while DNRA is more active at a certain depth and plays a significant role in NH4+ enrichment.

Effect of dam on iron species distribution and transformation in riparian zones

Yuxi Lu et al.

Summary: Dams play a significant role in the distribution and transformation of Fe species in riparian zones. This study investigated the impact of a dam on the spatial distribution and seasonal transformation of Fe species in the Han River riparian zone. Results showed that the dam altered the distribution pattern of solid Fe species and influenced the oxidation and reduction processes of Fe. These effects were attributed to variations in sediment lithology and hydrodynamic processes.

Effect of water chemistry on nitrogen transformation, dissolved organic matter composition and microbial community structure in hyporheic zone sediment columns

Longfei Wang et al.

Summary: Controlled surface water systems, such as those with dams, can cause dynamic changes in water levels, resulting in altered flow exchange patterns in the hyporheic zones. However, the effects on nitrogen transformation, dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition, and microbial communities under different scenarios of water source and hyporheic exchange have been poorly studied. This research investigated the nitrogen transformation in hyporheic zone sediments and focused on the relationship between microbial community structure, biological functions related to nitrogen transformation, and sediment-attached DOM compositions. The study found that the mixing of river water and groundwater enhanced microbial diversity, complexity of microbial co-occurrence networks, and nitrogen transformation functions. The composition of sediment-attached DOM was primarily humic fractions after hyporheic exchanges. Species such as Nitrospinae, Dinghuibacter, and Lentimicrobium played key roles in metabolizing nitrogen and DOM in the hyporheic sediments. This study provides valuable insights into the effects of water chemistry changes on nitrogen transformation, DOM compositional changes, and the linkages between community structure and DOM fractions in the hyporheic zones.

Widespread but Overlooked DNRA Process in a Full-Scale Simultaneous Partial Nitrification, Anammox, and Denitrification Plant

Zhibin Wang et al.

Summary: Similar to denitrification and anammox, DNRA is widely distributed in natural ecosystems, but often underestimated or ignored in WWTPs. A study on a full-scale SNAD WWTP revealed the coexistence of ammonia oxidizing bacteria, anammox bacteria, nitrite oxidizing bacteria, denitrifying bacteria, and DNRA organisms, with a higher relative abundance of the DNRA functional gene. The unintended selection of DNRA in the SNAD process created an engineering inefficiency of nitrogen removal by utilizing carbon that should be allocated for denitrification.

Sources and behavior of ammonium during riverbank filtration

Gustavo Covatti et al.

Summary: Ammonium is an undesirable substance in riverbank filtration schemes due to complications in post-treatment. Based on case studies from 40 sites worldwide, sources and behavior of ammonium during RBF were investigated. Typical concentrations of ammonium in bank filtrate range from 0.1 to 1.7 mg/l, with organic nitrogen mineralization in the riverbed being the main source and nitrification in the riverbed being the main sink. Transformations in the riverbed play a critical role in determining ammonium concentrations.
