Fructose Stimulated Colonic Arginine and Proline Metabolism Dysbiosis, Altered Microbiota and Aggravated Intestinal Barrier Dysfunction in DSS-Induced Colitis Rats

Ge Song et al.

Summary: The dysbiosis of intestinal microbiota and their metabolites is associated with metabolic syndrome. This study evaluated the effects of low intake of sucrose and fructose on experimental colitis in rats by examining the microbiome and metabolome. The results showed that sucrose and fructose reduced body weight, colon length, and increased inflammation in the colon. They also inhibited the expression of a tight junction protein and increased the level of lipopolysaccharide in the plasma. Moreover, sucrose and fructose altered the composition of gut microbiota and disrupted amino metabolism in the colon. These findings suggest that fructose aggravates colitis by affecting the interaction between gut microbiota and their metabolites.

Exploring the role of gut microbiota dysbiosis in gout pathogenesis: a systematic review

Salman Shirvani-Rad et al.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to summarize the role of gut dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of gout and uncover the underlying mechanisms. The review found that changes in the abundance of certain bacteria can disrupt purine metabolism and worsen gout. However, some butyrate-producing bacteria have higher abundance in healthy individuals and exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Additionally, lipopolysaccharide-releasing bacteria are also involved in the pathogenesis of gout through immune system stimulation.

Combined effects of host genetics and diet on human gut microbiota and incident disease in a single population cohort

Youwen Qin et al.

Summary: A study conducted on a large population-based cohort of 5,959 Finnish individuals identified genetic variations associated with gut microbial abundances. The study found 567 independent SNP-taxon associations, including associations with LCT, ABO, and MED13L genes. The findings shed light on the complex interactions between host genetics and gut microbiota, and their potential role in disease development.

Effects of β-Carotin and Green Tea Powder Diets on Alleviating the Symptoms of Gouty Arthritis and Improving Gut Microbiota in C57BL/6 Mice

Yu Feng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of a diet containing beta-carotene and green tea powder on the prevention of gouty arthritis in mice. The results showed that this diet reduced joint swelling and pain, lowered serum uric acid levels and inflammatory cytokines, improved gut microbiota, and reduced purine and pyrimidine metabolism. This supports the use of beta-carotene and green tea powder diet as a dietary adjustment method to prevent and treat gouty arthritis.

Lactobacillus paracasei X11 Ameliorates Hyperuricemia and Modulates Gut Microbiota in Mice

Jiayuan Cao et al.

Summary: This study identified Lactobacillus paracasei X11 as a probiotic strain with uric acid-lowering activity. It effectively degraded nucleotides and nucleosides, regulated uric acid metabolism-related factors, and restored the ratio of intestinal microbiota in a mouse model of hyperuricemia. This suggests that L. paracasei X11 has the potential to be developed as a novel probiotic strain for the amelioration of hyperuricemia.

Update Gout

Barbara Ankli et al.

Summary: Gout is a common form of arthritis worldwide, but it is often not considered a serious chronic disease. However, gout patients have an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and overall mortality. The prevalence of gout varies significantly among different countries, estimated to be 2.6% overall. Although environmental factors, such as diet and alcohol intake, play a role, genetic influences are gaining attention, especially in early-onset gout. Despite the availability of various treatment options, outcomes remain poor, with the disease often leading to disabling structural damages beyond the joints. Patient education and the involvement of trained general practitioners and nurses are hoped to improve the outcomes of this treatable disease.

Predicting the postmortem interval of burial cadavers based on microbial community succession

Jun Zhang et al.

Summary: This study characterized microbial communities in buried rat cadavers during decomposition and found distinct differences in community structures between different stages. Lower alpha diversity was observed in later decay stages. Linear relationships between microbial similarities and postmortem intervals were identified, and a random forest model was used to predict PMI with high accuracy. The results suggest that postmortem microbial community data can be a potential forensic tool for estimating accurate PMI of burial cadavers.

Summary: Long-term and excessive alcohol consumption are risk factors for osteoporosis, affecting bone metabolism and gut microbiota composition. The effects of alcohol on osteoporosis are age-dependent, with old rats showing more severe osteoporosis than young rats. Alcohol can activate T lymphocytes by regulating gut microbiota composition and further activate osteoclasts.
