Random Mutagenesis as a Promising Tool for Microalgal Strain Improvement towards Industrial Production

Mafalda Trovao et al.

Summary: Microalgae are a promising and sustainable feedstock for food and feed production, but high production costs hinder their wide use. Strain improvement technologies, such as gene editing and mutation induction, have been developed to enhance the performance of microalgae strains. This review focuses on random mutagenesis and discusses the challenges in strain improvement and commercialization, as well as the potential of high-throughput technologies for strain selection.

Model Application of Entomopathogenic Fungi as Alternatives to Chemical Pesticides: Prospects, Challenges, and Insights for Next-Generation Sustainable Agriculture

Bamisope Steve Bamisile et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the importance of controlling crop pests and diseases using natural and biological measures, particularly the use of insect-pathogenic fungi as a sustainable pest management technique. These fungi not only act as insect killers, but also provide other benefits such as plant pathogen antagonism and plant growth promotion.

Lecanicillium lecanii (Zimmermann) Zare & Gams, as an efficient biocontrol agent of tea thrips, Scirtothrips bispinosus Bagnall (Thysanoptera: Thripidae)

Mariappan Sankara Rama Subramaniam et al.

Summary: In this study, Lecanicillium lecanii was isolated from tea ecosystem and formulated into a wettable powder for controlling tea thrips, showing significant efficacy. Addition of jaggery under suitable conditions enhanced the efficacy of the biopesticide. The powder formulation was found to be safe for natural enemies in the tea ecosystem.
