Dynamics of gut microflora across the life cycle of Spodoptera frugiperda and its effects on the feeding and growth of larvae

Dongbiao Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of gut microbial community in the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) at different developmental stages and the impact of antibiotic treatment on the gut flora. The results showed that the composition of gut bacteria played an important role in the growth, development, and feeding of S. frugiperda. Antibiotic treatment inhibited the gut flora, leading to reduced food intake and body weight gain, as well as prolonged larval stage.

The dynamics of the microbial community in fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda during a life cycle

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The microbiome of fall armyworm undergoes dynamic changes throughout its life cycle, with Proteobacteria and Firmicutes being the dominant phyla. These changes in microbial composition lead to metabolic function variations, with OD1, Enterococcus, Comamonas, and Elizabethkingia contributing the most to these changes. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the fall armyworm's composition and its dynamic interaction with dietary microbiota.

Fall Armyworm Gut Bacterial Diversity Associated with Different Developmental Stages, Environmental Habitats, and Diets

Dan-Dan Li et al.

Summary: This study systematically explored the changes of microorganisms in the gut of Spodoptera frugiperda at different developmental stages, in different habitats, and with different diets. The results suggest that the gut microbiome of S. frugiperda can vary greatly depending on developmental stage, environment, and diet.

Comparison of Gut Bacterial Communities of Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) Reared on Different Host Plants

Dongbiao Lv et al.

Summary: Spodoptera frugiperda is a highly polyphagous and invasive agricultural pest that can harm over 300 plants and cause significant economic losses. In this study, the gut microbial community of S. frugiperda was found to be influenced by different host plants and treatments, playing a crucial role in host adaptation. Understanding the symbiotic relationships between invasive organisms and microorganisms is essential for developing more effective pest management strategies.

Dry and Rainy Seasons Significantly Alter the Gut Microbiome Composition and Reveal a Key Enterococcus sp. (Lactobacillales: Enterococcaceae) Core Component in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Corn Strain From Northwestern Colombia

Marlon Felipe Higuita Palacio et al.

Summary: Spodoptera frugiperda, a polyphagous pest of economic crops, has a widely distributed gut microbiota with differences between corn and rice strains. Seasonal variations in gut microbiome composition were observed in corn strain larvae from Northwest Colombia. The core microbiome consisted of Enterococcus, Erysipelatoclostridium, Rasltonia, and Rhizobium, with significant differences in diversity between dry and rainy seasons. Targeting the stability of this core microbiome could be an alternative pest control strategy.

Summary: Oilseed rape, soybean and sunflower planted in China are all suitable host plants for the fall armyworm, with soybean having the lowest larval survival rate, longest developmental duration, lowest pupation rate, and lowest pupal mass. Sunflower was overall the most suitable host plant for the fall armyworm.

Case study on the first immigration of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda invading into China

Sun Xiao-xu et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the first immigration of Fall Armyworm (FAW) into China, with the early immigrant population being of the corn strain and mainly colonizing corn in Pu'er, Dehong, and Baoshan areas in Yunnan province. Migration trajectory simulation suggested that the moths might have mainly come from the eastern area in the mid-latitude region of Myanmar.

Host Phylogeny and Diet Shape Gut Microbial Communities Within Bamboo-Feeding Insects

Kuanguan Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, gut microbiota of bamboo-feeding insects were examined to understand their convergent adaptation to extreme diet specialization. Results showed that while both phylogeny and diet can influence the gut microbiome composition, phylogeny primarily drives the convergent adaptation to a highly specialized diet in insects feeding on bamboo.
