Tidal amplification and river capture in response to land reclamation in the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta

D. S. van Maren et al.

Summary: Globally, intertidal areas are being reclaimed for agriculture and urban expansion, resulting in high human pressure on the coastal zone. The Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta is a prime example of this development. A study on the southwest GBD reveals how land reclamation leads to tidal amplification, channel shoaling, bank erosion, and interaction between channels. Positive feedback mechanisms, such as immediate loss of tidal storage and asynchronous reclamation, contribute to pluvial flooding, bank erosion, and poorly navigable waterways. Intervention measures need to consider these complex feedback mechanisms and adopt nature-based and holistic approaches.

River, tide and morphology interaction in a macro-tidal estuary with active morphological evolutions

Dongfeng Xie et al.

Summary: Understanding tidal dynamics in estuaries is crucial for tidal predictions and assessments of sediment transport. This study analyzes the multiple-timescale tidal dynamics in the Qiantang Estuary and finds that tidal amplification is stronger during spring tide in the upper estuary. Seasonal and interannual variations in water levels depend on local bathymetrical conditions. The relationship between tidal ranges and depth is significant in the upper estuary.

Response of tidal dynamics to successive land reclamation in the Lingding Bay over the last century

Nanyang Chu et al.

Summary: Globally, land reclamation significantly impacts estuarine hydrodynamics, and Lingding Bay in southern China serves as an ideal area to study the mechanism of tidal regime shift in wide bays. Using a state-of-the-art modeling tool, the study reproduces the tidal propagation pattern in different years and reveals a prominent shift in tidal amplitude, residual current, and tidal energy flux in Lingding Bay from 1989 to 2016. The imbalance in tidal energy distribution caused by reclamation leads to a shift in tidal dynamics, potentially increasing saltwater intrusion and flooding risk in the eastern part of Lingding Bay.

Sediment dynamics in the mudbank of the Yangtze River Estuary under regime shift of source and sink

Dai Zhang et al.

Summary: This article studies the tidal dynamics and spatial variability of the mudbank in the Yangtze Estuary, revealing the transition of the mudbank from a sediment sink to a sediment source. The study finds that the tidal range increased, salinity dynamics changed, and the landward sediment budget increased, resulting in more severe erosion in the mudbank.

A field study of near-junction-apex flow at a large river confluence and its response to the effects of floodplain flow

Kun Li et al.

Summary: A field investigation was conducted at the confluence between the Yangtze River and the outflow channel of Poyang Lake to study the confluence dynamics. The results showed that the alternate flow mechanism and momentum flux ratio had significant impacts on the characteristics of the stagnation zone, mixing interface, and secondary flow at the confluence.

Long-term morphological evolution and its mechanism of Lingdingyang Estuary: Interferences from anthropogenic forcings

Kanglin Chen et al.

Summary: This study simulated the long-term morphological evolution process of the Lingdingyang Estuary (LE) and investigated the impact of high-intensity human activities on its geomorphic evolution. The results showed that high-intensity reclamation weakened deposition in the Inner-Lingdingyang Estuary (ILE) while enhancing deposition in the Outer-Lingdingyang Estuary (OLE). The combined effect of a decline in sediment discharge and high-intensity reclamation significantly decreased the total net deposition volume of LE and caused the deposition area to move upstream.

Hydrodynamics and water quality impacts of large-scale reclamation projects in the Pearl River Estuary

Yongming Shen et al.

Summary: This study used modeling to investigate the mechanism behind the evolution of the seasonal environment and the impact of reclamation projects on hydrodynamics, suspended sediment, and water quality in the Pearl River Estuary. The results showed that reclamation projects significantly alter the residual current fields and decrease tidal prisms, leading to changes in water exchange and material transport. The distribution of chlorophyll-a, suspended sediment, and silicate also showed variations due to altered water exchange and chlorophyll-a distribution.

The influence of dredging on estuarine hydrodynamics: Historical evolution of the Santos estuarine system, Brazil

Julia Reid et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of deepening navigation channels by dredging on estuarine hydrodynamics in the Santos estuarine system (SES) in Brazil. The results show that the gradual deepening of the channels resulted in changes in tidal propagation, stratification of the water column, and transport of water and materials through the channels. It also led to increased saline intrusion, decreased water volume transported through the Santos channel, and an increased influence of tides in the system.

Seasonal Tidal Dynamics in the Qiantang Estuary: The Importance of Morphological Evolution

Dongfeng Xie et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the seasonal interplay of river and tide in the Qiantang Estuary, China, particularly examining the influences of active morphological evolution induced by seasonal variation of river discharge. Results show strong seasonal variations of water level influenced by the interaction between river discharge and tide, which can only be fully explained by including the effect of morphological changes. The study distinguishes two types of influences of river discharge variation on tidal dynamics in the estuary, with one being immediately induced by high flow and the other continuing for a longer period due to bed erosion and recovery.
