COVID-19 associated mold infections: Review of COVID-19 associated pulmonary aspergillosis and mucormycosis

Shiang-Fen Huang et al.

Summary: COVID-19-associated mold infection (CAMI) refers to the development of mold infections in COVID-19 patients. The co-pathogenesis of viral and fungal infections involves disruption of tissue barriers, damage to the respiratory system, and immune dysregulation. Risk factors for fungal infections during COVID-19 include the use of immune modulators. CAPA and CAM have been increasingly reported during the COVID-19 pandemic. Diagnosis is challenging and treatment with antifungal drugs is often associated with high mortality rates.

Pathogenicity and virulence of Aspergillus fumigatus

Kayleigh Earle et al.

Summary: Pulmonary infections caused by Aspergillus fumigatus, a mold pathogen, are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Immunosuppression, chronic respiratory conditions, and co-infections with viral or bacterial pathogens are recognized risk factors for the development of pulmonary aspergillosis. This review provides a summary of our current understanding of the underlying mechanisms and focuses on emerging at-risk populations.

Summary: Fungi play a significant role in the progression of lung disease in Cystic fibrosis, with the emergence of novel CFTR modulators changing the outlook of disease progression. However, this also brings about unknown factors and drug-drug interactions that need further addressing.
