A Systematic Review on the Effects of Acute Aerobic Exercise on Neurophysiological, Molecular, and Behavioral Measures in Chronic Stroke

Anjali Sivaramakrishnan et al.

Summary: This systematic review examined the effects of aerobic exercise on neuroplasticity measures and behavioral measures in stroke patients. The review found that moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic exercise may induce changes in neuroplasticity parameters in stroke patients, although the results varied and the methodological quality of the studies was moderate. There is a need for a consensus on an exercise priming paradigm and for larger controlled studies of higher quality.

Increased cortisol levels caused by acute resistance physical exercise impair memory and learning ability

Jose-Luis Bermejo et al.

Summary: This study examined the effects of acute high-intensity resistance exercise on cortisol levels and cognitive performance in healthy male powerlifting subjects. It found that acute exercise immediately increased cortisol levels and led to a significant deterioration in memory and learning ability. The study highlights the relative effects of resistance exercise on cortisol and cognitive performance based on the intensity and type of exercise, the timing of measurement, and the brain areas involved.

Multiple Motor Learning Processes in Humans: Defining Their Neurophysiological Bases

Danny Spampinato et al.

Summary: Learning new motor behaviors involves multiple distinct neural substrates, which can be understood through formation of internal models and positive reinforcement. Noninvasive brain stimulation techniques can provide insights into the underlying motor learning processes. Different physiological mechanisms contribute differently to recalibrating previously learned movements and acquiring new motor control policies, with contributions changing based on the time course of learning and type of behaviors being learned.

The acute exercise-cognition interaction: From the catecholamines hypothesis to an interoception model

Summary: The interoception feedback during exercise can affect the release of catecholamines in the brain, impacting cognitive performance. When exercise intensity reaches maximum, cognitive performance is influenced by the interaction between motivation, perceived effort costs, and perceived availability of resources.

Yujiro Yamada et al.

Summary: The effects of blood flow restricted exercise on cognition are still unclear due to limited research in this area. The hypothesis suggests that blood flow restricted exercise could potentially enhance cognitive domains through increases in lactate production, catecholamine concentration, and PGC-1 alpha expression. Further investigations are needed to test this hypothesis.

The acute effects of aerobic exercise on sensorimotor adaptation in chronic stroke

Christopher P. Mackay et al.

Summary: The aim of the study was to investigate whether acute aerobic exercise promotes sensorimotor adaptation in stroke survivors. The results showed that acute aerobic exercise significantly increased sensorimotor adaptation in chronic stroke survivors, indicating a potential role for aerobic exercise in promoting the recovery of sensorimotor function in this population.

Summary: The study evaluated the safety and feasibility of treadmill aerobic exercise in moderate normobaric hypoxia among chronic hemiparetic stroke survivors. Results showed that moderate normobaric hypoxia exposure appeared to be a safe and feasible method to increase cardiovascular strain during submaximal exercise in chronic hemiparetic stroke survivors.
