Thin film processing of multiferroic BiFeO3: From sophistication to simplicity. A review

Carlos Gumiel et al.

Summary: Obtaining BiFeO3 in thin film form for electronic devices is a critical issue. Different techniques have been used, but there is controversy over which one is most suitable. It has been shown that all techniques can produce uniform films, but there are drawbacks. The literature suggests that solution-based techniques are simpler and have lower energy consumption compared to other techniques.

Room-temperature multiferroic behaviour in Co/Fe co-substituted layer-structured Aurivillius phase ceramics

Mahmoud S. Alkathy et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of Fe/Co co-substitution on the multiferroic properties of BSmT, revealing ferromagnetic and ferroelectric behavior at room temperature, with the sample at x = 0.4 exhibiting the highest magnetization values. The interaction between oxygen vacancies and magnetic ions contributes to the occurrence of magnetism, while the reversible polarization induced by an electric field demonstrates the ferroelectric nature of the ceramics.

Effective bandgap tuning with non-trivial modulation in room temperature magnetic and electrical responses of low level Ba-Cr co-substituted BiFeO3 nanoparticles

M. M. Hoque et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of low-level Ba-Cr co-incorporation on the structural and functional properties of sol-gel synthesized BiFeO3 nanoparticles. The results show that Ba substitution enhances structural stability, reduces optical bandgap, and increases saturation magnetization. These findings open up potential opportunities for photo-chemical/electric and magnetic applications.

Summary: This study reports a novel single-phase magnetoelectric film that exhibits switchable polarization and magnetization, allowing for electric field control of magnetism. By substituting ions in the spinel sublattices, local distortions and electric fields are induced, modulating the superexchange interactions between magnetic ions and resulting in ferroelectricity and magnetoelectric effects.

Effects of Sm and Cr co-doping on structural, magnetic, optical and photocatalytic properties of BiFeO3 nanoparticles

Mekonnen Tefera Kebede et al.

Summary: In this study, bismuth ferrite and co-doped nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using the tartaric acid modified sol-gel method. The structural phase transition and improved photocatalytic properties were investigated through XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and FESEM techniques. The results demonstrated that the co-doped nanoparticles exhibited enhanced ferromagnetic and photocatalytic behaviors compared to pristine bismuth ferrite, which can be attributed to changes in ionic radii, oxygen vacancies, and narrow bandgap.

Summary: Co-, Ni-, and Mn-doped BiFeO3 (BFO) ceramics were synthesized through a solid-state reaction, showing visible-light response. Co- and Ni-doped BFO samples exhibited enhanced ferromagnetic order at room temperature with secondary phases present in minor quantities. Optical spectra revealed two absorption bands and M - H hysteresis loops suggested enhanced ferromagnetism in the Co- and Ni-doped BFO samples.
