Relationship Between Maternal Serum Cortisol and Maternal Insulin Resistance and Fetal Ultrasound Characteristics in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

Son Tien Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the relationship between maternal serum cortisol and insulin resistance indices and fetal ultrasound characteristics in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). The results showed that serum cortisol levels in GDM were positively correlated with abdominal circumference, fasting plasma glucose, insulin, triglycerides, HOMA2-IR, and Mathew indices, and negatively correlated with QUICKI and McAuley indices. In multivariate linear regression analysis, cortisol levels were positively correlated with fetal abdominal circumference, head circumference, and biparietal diameter.

Associations between infant sex and DNA methylation across umbilical cord blood, artery, and placenta samples

Anne K. Bozack et al.

Summary: This study examines DNAm patterns in cord blood, placenta, and umbilical artery samples, identifying DMRs and DMPs associated with sex. Replication analysis shows overlap with identified DMRs in an independent cohort. Results indicate higher methylation levels among females in cord blood and artery samples, but higher levels among males in placenta samples. Further research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms contributing to sex-specific DNAm differences across tissues and their impact on response to environmental stressors.

High glucose increases IGF-2/H19 expression by changing DNA methylation in HTR8/SVneo trophoblast cells

Qidi Zhang et al.

Summary: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can alter the methylation levels of the insulin-like growth factor-2 (IGF-2)/H19 gene promoters, leading to increased expression of IGF-2/H19. This study further enhances our understanding of the relationship between GDM and fetal growth regulation.

Maternal obesity increases DNA methylation and decreases RNA methylation in the human placenta

Wei-Bin Shen et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity is associated with changes in epigenetic markers in the placenta, including DNA hypermethylation and inhibition of RNA modifications. These changes may be related to fetal and placental hypoxia caused by maternal obesity.

Maternal Choline Supplementation and High-Fat Feeding Interact to Influence DNA Methylation in Offspring in a Time-Specific Manner

Hunter W. Korsmo et al.

Summary: Maternal choline supplementation under high-fat conditions during pregnancy led to increased global DNA methylation and expression of Dnmt1 in fetal organs, but postnatally the offspring showed lower global DNA methylation levels and unchanged Dnmt1 expression. Site-specific DNA methylation analysis revealed higher methylation of specific CpG sites in key genes related to lipid synthesis in the HFCS offspring.

Epigenetic Alterations of Maternal Tobacco Smoking during Pregnancy: A Narrative Review

Aurelie Nakamura et al.

Summary: In utero exposure to maternal tobacco smoking can lead to epigenetic changes affecting the birth and development of infants, with DNA methylation being the most extensively studied mechanism. Some studies suggest reversibility in certain genomic regions of DNAm and memory of smoking exposure in other regions, especially in cases of smoking cessation before or during pregnancy.

One carbon metabolism and early development: a diet-dependent destiny

Hunter W. Korsmo et al.

Summary: One carbon metabolism is crucial for early development by providing one carbon units for biosynthesis and epigenetic modification of the genome. Prenatal 1C nutrient deficiencies have been shown to impair fetal growth and neurodevelopment, while sufficient maternal 1C nutrient intake is protective. However, excess or imbalance of maternal 1C nutrients may pose potential risks to early development, highlighting the need for further research on the dose-response relationship among prenatal 1C nutrient exposure, epigenetic modifications, and developmental outcomes.
