Filling gaps in experiences religious understanding of people living with cancer in palliative care: a phenomenological qualitative study

Keeping the Light On: A Qualitative Study on Hope Perceptions at the End of Life in Portuguese Family Dyads

Summary: Hope plays a crucial role in how patients and their families deal with end-of-life challenges. Palliative care research should consider the perspectives of both patients and their family carers due to their strong interdependence. This qualitative study explores the experience of hope in dyads composed of end-of-life patients and their family carers. The findings highlight the importance of hope for all participants and the challenges involved. Barriers to hope include illness limitations, anguish and helplessness, and poor communication with healthcare professionals. On the other hand, hope facilitators include support from others, positive mindset, connection with nature, faith in religion and science, and compassion and altruism. Overcoming the challenges and looking beyond the disease itself is the main task for family dyads. Palliative care teams should promote and nurture realistic hope, assisting families in preparing for death in the context of advanced cancer.
