Sleep disturbance predicts worse cognitive performance in subsequent years: A longitudinal population-based cohort study

Anders Behrens et al.

Summary: This study examines the association between subjective measures of sleep duration and sleep disturbance and future cognitive decline. The findings suggest that sleep disturbance and long sleep are predictive of worse cognitive function in later life.

The Bidirectional Association Between Cognitive Function and Gait Speed in Chinese Older Adults: Longitudinal Observational Study

Haibin Li et al.

Summary: This study examined the longitudinal bidirectional association between gait speed and cognitive function in older Chinese adults. It found that baseline cognitive function had a stronger association with subsequent gait speed than the reverse. This interlinkage is noteworthy and suggests that maintaining normal cognitive function may be an important intervention strategy for mitigating age-related gait speed reduction.

Human Gait Analysis in Neurodegenerative Diseases: A Review

Grazia Cicirelli et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent literature on technologies and methodologies for quantitative human gait analysis in neurodegenerative diseases. Technological instruments can greatly support clinical diagnosis and severity assessment of these pathologies. The paper provides an overview of sensors, features, and processing methodologies, and discusses issues related to gait analysis. It explains the phases of the human gait cycle and common non-normal gait patterns observed in neurodegenerative diseases. The paper also presents common processing techniques for feature selection and extraction, classification, and clustering, and concludes with a discussion on current open problems and future directions.

The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) with a double threshold: improving the MoCA for triaging patients in need of a neuropsychological assessment.

Geraud M. F. C. Dautzenberg et al.

Summary: In this study, different selection strategies were compared to identify patients in need of NPA efficiently. The use of a double-threshold MoCA improved the clinical value of the assessment by selecting patients likely to have dementia, those to be discharged, and those at increased risk for active monitoring. The double-threshold MoCA not only achieved the best results in terms of accuracy, PPV, NPV, and reducing FP referrals by 65%, but also effectively triaged most MD patients and identified MCIs for active monitoring.

Dual-task gait and mild behavioral impairment: The interface between non-cognitive dementia markers

Dylan X. Guan et al.

Summary: This study found that mild behavioral impairment (MBI) and dual-task gait cost (DTGC) are associated with gait speed and DTGC in non-demented individuals, regardless of the presence or absence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). These findings provide evidence of the relationship between non-cognitive dementia markers of behavior and gait.

The Prevalence of Mild Cognitive Impairment among Chinese People: A Meta-Analysis

Yan Deng et al.

Summary: The systematic review and meta-analysis estimated the pooled prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among the elderly population in China to be 15.4%. Different screening tools and diagnostic criteria resulted in varying prevalence rates, with Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) showing a higher prevalence compared to Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Demographics, lifestyles, morbidities, and living conditions were found to impact the prevalence of MCI in China. Screening tools and diagnostic criteria need to be considered in future studies on MCI prevalence.
