Are dietary intake and nutritional status of specific polyunsaturated fatty acids correlated with sarcopenia outcomes in community-dwelling older adults with sarcopenia? - Exploratory results from ENHANce

Jolan Dupont et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the relationship between dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) intake, nutritional PUFAs status and sarcopenia outcomes in sarcopenic older adults. The results showed no correlation between dietary PUFAs intake and status. However, some markers of PUFAs intake and status were positively associated with sarcopenia outcomes.

Dietary patterns, skeletal muscle mass loss, and cardiovascular risk among elderly men: A preliminary cross-sectional study in Sichuan province

Tingxin Li et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the correlation between dietary patterns (DPs) with skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and cardiovascular risks in Sichuan males aged >= 65-years-old. The results showed that animal-based and processed food DP was positively associated with overweight/obesity and dyslipidemia, while traditional DP was negatively associated with these risks. Ovo-lacto vegetarian DP was negatively associated with dyslipidemia and hyperuricemia.

Association of Dietary Protein Intake with Muscle Mass in Elderly Chinese: A Cross-Sectional Study

Yifei Ouyang et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study investigates the association between dietary protein intake and muscle mass in elderly Chinese adults. The results show that high total protein intake and high plant-based protein intake are positively associated with higher muscle mass. Therefore, it is encouraged to increase daily protein intake to maintain muscle health in the elderly.

Plant-Based Foods and Vascular Function: A Systematic Review of Dietary Intervention Trials in Older Subjects and Hypothesized Mechanisms of Action

Massimiliano Tucci et al.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases, being the leading cause of mortality worldwide, are closely related to vascular function. This systematic review summarizes the available evidence on the effects of selected plant-based foods on vascular function parameters in older subjects. It suggests that these foods may improve vascular function by restoring nitric oxide impairment, although the existing studies are limited and heterogeneous. More high-quality intervention trials are needed to better understand the mechanisms through which vegetable foods can benefit vascular health in older subjects.

Nutritional Status and Habits among People on Vegan, Lacto/Ovo-Vegetarian, Pescatarian and Traditional Diets

Izabela Kwiatkowska et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with different dietary habits showed variations in consumption frequency of certain foods, with omnivores and pescatarians consuming more sweets and dairy products, while vegans and vegetarians consumed more legumes and nuts. Body composition analysis revealed that vegetarians had higher skeletal muscle mass and mineral content compared to omnivores and pescatarians.

Association between dietary inflammatory potential and the probable sarcopenia among community-dwelling older adults: a cross-sectional study

Zahra Esmaeily et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between dietary inflammatory potential and probable sarcopenia among older adults. The findings suggest that adhering to a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with a higher likelihood of sarcopenia, and individuals with sarcopenia have a lower intake of anti-inflammatory nutrients.

Impact of nutraceuticals and dietary supplements on mitochondria modifications in healthy aging: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Lorenzo Lippi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the effects of different dietary supplements on mitochondria modifications in older adults. The results showed positive effects on mitochondrial oxidative and antioxidant capacity, volume, bioenergetic capacity, and mitochondrial transcriptome based on the nutritional supplements. However, there is still a lack of research in this field.

Dietary protein considerations for muscle protein synthesis and muscle mass preservation in older adults

Eunice T. Olaniyan et al.

Summary: The bioavailability of amino acids is crucial for muscle protein synthesis and preservation of skeletal muscle mass, especially in the elderly population. While leucine is known for its role as a potent stimulator of muscle protein synthesis, the impact of other essential amino acids remains unclear due to limited data. A mixture of animal and plant proteins may contribute to increased muscle protein synthesis and potentially attenuate muscle wasting, but further research is needed to fully understand the biological impact of protein blends in older adults.

Development and validation of a simple anthropometric equation to predict appendicular skeletal muscle mass

Ryoko Kawakami et al.

Summary: The study developed a more accurate anthropometric equation to predict appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) compared to equations using calf circumference as the sole variable and previously reported equations. The equation showed smaller total error and higher intraclass correlation coefficient values in both men and women.

Dietary Protein Intake Dynamics in Elderly Chinese from 1991 to 2018

Yifei Ouyang et al.

Summary: The study found a significant decrease in dietary protein intake among the elderly Chinese population over a 28-year period, with cereals and meat as the main sources and an increase in the proportion of energy gained from fat. Despite positive effects on protein quality due to dietary pattern changes, some elderly Chinese individuals may face the risk of inadequate dietary protein intake.
