Hospitalization costs for children with pneumonia in Shanghai, China from 2019 to 2020

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed hospitalization costs for children with pneumonia in a public hospital in Shanghai, China and evaluated factors that affect these costs. The results showed that pneumonia is the leading cause of death in children under 5 years old. The highest expenses were for laboratory diagnosis, general medical service, western medicine, and antibacterial drugs. To reduce the burden of pneumonia in children, it is important to optimize the use of medical resources and include various types of medical insurance in the children's medical security system, as well as promote the vaccination of pneumonia vaccines.

The Burden of COPD in China and Its Provinces: Findings From the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Peng Yin et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the burden of COPD in China and analyze the trends from 1990 to 2019. It found that while the incidence and prevalence of COPD increased over time, the number of deaths and DALYs decreased. The burden of COPD was higher in older age groups, and tobacco use was identified as the leading risk factor for COPD mortality and DALYs. Western provinces had higher COPD burden.

Summary: This study explored the global distribution and trends of COPD burdens attributable to different risk factors. The findings indicate that there are regional differences in COPD burdens caused by risk factors, and that the burden related to ambient particulate matter, ozone, and high temperature is increasing in low-middle and low SDI regions.

Pneumonia Is Associated with Increased Mortality in Hospitalized COPD Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Yan Yu et al.

Summary: The presence of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in hospitalized chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is associated with higher mortality, longer hospital stays, increased need for mechanical ventilation, and more ICU admissions. However, CAP does not significantly affect ICU stay length or readmission rate. Confirmation of CAP through radiological means and increased attention to these patients is recommended.

Factors associated with inpatient length of stay among hospitalised patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, China, 2016-2017: a retrospective study

Fen Dong et al.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study conducted in a tertiary hospital in China aimed to identify factors associated with length of stay (LOS) in COPD hospitalised patients. The study found that comorbidities such as venous thromboembolism and osteoporosis were significantly associated with longer LOS, leading to increased healthcare costs. Quality improvement initiatives to reduce COPD economic burden should focus on identifying high-risk patients and implementing early interventions.

Summary: This study reported the hospitalization costs of treating fractures in Chinese patients aged over 45 years and investigated the factors related to variation in costs. The study found that the vertebra, tibia/fibula, and hip were the most frequent fracture sites, and that longer hospital stays, higher hospital levels, and health insurance coverage were associated with higher hospitalization costs.

Summary: This study investigated the association between multiple comorbidities, including asthma, lung cancer, heart failure, and exacerbation risk in a Korean COPD population. The results showed that the number of comorbidities, certain comorbidities, old age, male sex, low BMI, and current smoking were independent risk factors for severe exacerbation in COPD patients.

Does the universal medical insurance system reduce catastrophic health expenditure among middle-aged and elderly households in China? A longitudinal analysis

Yue Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that households enrolled in the New Rural Cooperative Medical Insurance Scheme were associated with a lower incidence of catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) compared to those without insurance. Factors such as members over 65 years old, chronic diseases, poor self-reported health conditions, and receiving healthcare were associated with a higher risk of CHE. Large household size and high household income per capita were major protective factors against CHE incidence.
